Utah Attorney General Calls for Retailers to Boycott "25 to Life"

For 25 to Life, the hits just keep on coming.

In the latest bad news for Eidos' controversial cops & robbers shooter, Salt Lake Weekly reports that Utah's Attorney General Mark Shurtleff will ask retailers not to stock the game when it ships in 2006. Shurtleff thus joins Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) as well as the families of slain police officers in his opposition to 25 to Life.

As reported on GamePolitics and elsewhere, on Monday Eidos canceled a planned October release date for the beleaguered game. The reasons behind the schedule change are not known. Of the delay, CEO Bill Gardner said cryptically that it was being done, "in the best interest of the business."

The Salt Lake Weekly took a dim editorial view of Shurtleff's position, saying in part, "With citizens' groups cranking up the family values meter, it isn't surprising that politicians who should know better are getting in on the act...Shurtleff, often a reasonable guy, appears to be running for something with recent moves to restrain trade of businesses he doesn't like. The AG says he'll ask retailers not to stock a video game, 25 to Life...Some police groups accuse it of glorifying crime, even if it's only a video game..."

OMG, people need to concentrate on more important things like Hurrican Katrina, instead of bitching about a video game cause they dont like whats inside it, if they dont want kids to play it, dont let them have it!

You'd think that is common sense, but blaming voters doesn't help the prime directive. Making restrictive laws that will most likely cause retailers to stop carring certain games so that no one, child or adult, may play them....somehow furthers the prime directive.

I never did understand the prime directive.

the rest of the rant. :)

Shurtleff earlier called for a law to remove fruit-flavored, low-alcohol beverages from grocery store shelves. They pack less punch than Utah 3.2 beer, but Shurtleff cited a study stating that girls like them.

One of the fundemental principles of this country is that everybody has freedom of speech, and everyone else has the freedom to not listen. If parents or groups don't want to/don't want their kids to play a certain game, DON'T BUY IT. How hard is it to understand? Banning games is not the answer.

The answer is right in front of them, dont let the kids have it if it has violent situations in it. But the government cant see that...i wonder why

Considering this is in Utah, Mormon central, I can't say I'm terrbily surprised to see this kind of thing going on here. I am surprised it took them this long to jump on the bandwagon tho.

I concur. If I had known a few months ago that the makers of 25 to Life were based in the blandest state of them all, I'd have seen this coming. And Avalanche should have too. But I'll credit them for having balls.

I am surprised at that site's take on the issue though. You'd think they'd be kissing this guy's ass like no tommorrow. Good on them for having some fucking sense.

Stereotype alert.

Re: Wait, hold the phone...

Yeah, because movies like the Godfather and Scarface never glorified any crime.

If you can play as the police, that would be glorifing justice. See, both sides get equal representation!

There right! We have to teach our coddled children that reading Vogue is a bigger sin then Communism and Flag burning combined!

common sense is not that common

I had a little talk with my sister about this, and she gave me an Awesome quote..

"in this world you are going to find that Common sense is an Uncommon thing"

Get this, she's a none gamer, and she still Thinks jt and the rest are whack jobs.

Double Owned I say.

Re: common sense is not that common

I think if most people knew the kind of person JT was, they be very wary of anything he said. As for that quote, it's nice that someone finally put the obvious into words, though I've heard that being uttered by people before.

Jack is a Whack job, of that I have no doubt.

Well, I just attempted to have, a conversation with jack in order to clarifiy some of his views, and as I suspected, we were right.

Jack Thompson is indeed engaged in a personal vedetta against the game industry. Before I even began HE attempted to turn the call into a debate, then hung up without provocation. So I called him back. Now, here was my main issue, and here was his respone.

I explained that I had noted, in the past, he seemed to be aiming for child saftey, but as of late his views seemed to have shifted. I was curious as to what his goal was. His answer, and I quote "Anything to cripple this industry, I am behind"

Before I could move on to my second point, he hung up yet again. It strikes me as odd that though I was nothing but civil to him, he was rude, abrasive, and argumentitive from the get go.

Its clear to me now why he has lost all his court cases. Regardless of his law degree, jack is unwilling to see anything other then his own views, and this is why the court, time and again, has shot him down.

I'm toying with the idea of calling back, but I've come to understand that it may be a waste. I simply wanted to get some points clarified for my own records on this debate, and he acted with the maturity of a child.

That a man of his years would be afraid to debate logicly and civily, and prefers to resort to name calling and rudeness, is a shame, and makes me think that insulting him is exactly what he wants us to do. He needs the attention, cause he knows without fear, all his arguments mean nothing.

If anyone wants to call him and challange him, thats fine, but me, I'll wait for him to call back. I prefer to talke to civil, intelligent people like those here, rather then to trade insults with a man who clearly has lost sight of what truly made america great.

Freedom
Equality
Tollerance
Growth

Jack Thompson is stuck in the past, locked in his own little world, and I think it best for us all to just leave him there and turn our attention to those who might actually be willing to listen to intelligent to debate. Yee may be a bit extreme, but I would be willing to bet that even he, is not that far out of touch.

Re: Jack is a Whack job, of that I have no doubt.

The exact same thing happened to me. EXACTLY. Unfortunately, you just cannot talk with him about anything. He is unwilling to have a logical conversation. He calls you names, and hangs up on you, and then tries to blame you for attempting to understand. Me personally, I will never talk to the man again, or call him ever again. I don't believe anybody should even acknowledge him at this point. We don't need to listen because he has absolutely nothing constructive to add to these problems. He has lost all credibility with me, and what's worse is that I have lost all respect for him. I think his behavior is unprofessional and I think he gives lawyers a very bad name.

I refuse to acknowledge him as he is simply, in my opinion, a hindrance to the issues that need to be solved.

yeah

A violent video game should be the least of everyone's problems. If people really want to be angry about something, they should be angry about how it took so long for FEMA to response to Hurricane Katrina and the fact that gas is over $3.00 bucks a gallon and that are soldiers are being killed left and right and all of the other crap that is going within the world and within are own government.

A Scoreboard would help!

Geez, the number of games being attacked is certainly on the rise! I mean wow! The legislation and public outcries against certain games are just going through the roof! We could use a scoreboard to keep tabs on all the games that are getting the cold shoulder, and then BUY them! :) (j/k)

Anyway, let's see here...

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - (Two Words: Hot Coffee)
25 To Life - (Cops don't like it because you can play as robbers too)
187: Ride or Die - (I think the outcry this fell flat when the game SUCKED!)
Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure - (Graffitti in New York? Get out of town!)
True Crime: New York City - (The last game had freakin' Snoop Dogg, a guy in a Sandwich costume, and floating skulls. Worried? NAH!)
NARC - (great arcade game, BAD concept for a bargain bin update!)
Bully - (Oh no! You can hurl dodgeballs and use a slingshot! The horror!)
The Sims 2 - (Oh wait! False Alarm! My Bad!)
Killer 7 - (What were those Japanese developers thinking? Weren't they sensitive to American viewpoints!)

I think that about covers the more recent flag raisings as of 2005. Anything pre-'05 is not being counted.

Now... are there any games that I missed?

Thanks for the update, but i must politely decline the request to buy NARC &/or 187: Ride or Die. ;)

Ever notice that no one got wildly worked up over Hugh Hefner's game, I guess he is too strong to oppose.

Does Jack hate all games, or just violent ones?

Which is it?

Re: Does Jack hate all games, or just violent ones?

Just violent ones. He only jumped on the Hot Coffee bandwagon because it lent support to his "R* conspiracy" theory. The one where all violent games are made for and advertised to 10 year olds.

Re: UK Manhunt case

rofl. Her's his interview on IGN.

http://ps2.ign.com/articles/536/536062p1.html

Thompson: By the way, the reports that the game belonged to the victim are false. Somebody in a gaming magazine in Scotland or England put that out. That's false. The game belonged to the murderer.

It was the BBC & the police, not a "gaming magazine".

Leicestershire Police said after the trial that robbery was the motive behind the attack, and not the game.

They added: "We can confirm the game was not found in Warren Leblanc's room [the killer], it was found in Stefan Pakeerah's room [the victim]."

Stefan's mother, Giselle, who called for violent computer games to be banned, claimed her son only had the game because it had been lent to him by Leblanc.

Warren Leblanc, 17, repeatedly stabbed 14-year-old Stefan Pakeerah after luring him to a Leicester park to steal from him on 27 February.

Roderick Price QC, defending, said Leblanc had been motivated by fear of a gang to whom he owed a small amount of money.

The court had been told Leblanc had intended to rob Stefan so he could settle a £75 debt.

As for the lawsuit, the Times reported that they had sued, and Jack claims that's false. I'm inclined to believe him, since he didn't list it among his "accomplishments".

Lawyer Jack Thompson, who is campaigning against the sale of violent video games to children, said he had written to its producers warning that there would be copycat attacks.

Later the father tried to sue on his own, but I don't think Jack was involved in that. He represented the mother in the initial threats to the company.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=312008&in_page_id=1770

The research evidence on media violence causing harm to viewers is wildly exaggerated and does not stand up to scrutiny.

Quote from 2004 report to the British Video Standards Council.

Yes! There is now an article out now that actually shows the crap others have been throwing out, and is, as you said, non-bias!!!

Also, it gives some very intreaging facts about age and violent aggressions that gamers get (almost zero)
