GTA Insanity Defense Fails; Cop-killer Found Guilty

It took just one hour for an Alabama jury to reject Devin Moore's insanity defense, convicting the 20-year old of murdering two Fayette police officers and a police dispatcher in June, 2003. The jury of eleven women and one man will deliberate Moore's fate when the penalty phase begins on Wednesday. Moore could receive the death sentence.

Part of Moore's insanity claim was based on compulsive playing of Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City. A civil suit filed on behalf of the victims' families by Miami attorney and self-described "anti-game crusader" Jack Thompson is expected to begin after the criminal case wraps up. Defendants in the lawsuit include Wal-Mart and GameStop, where Moore purchased the games, as well as PlayStation 2 manufacturer Sony and GTA publisher Take-Two Interactive.

Pictured at left are two of Devin Moore's victims. At upper left is Corporal James Crump, 40. At lower left is Officer Arnie Strickland, 55. Not pictured is Police Dispatcher Leslie "Ace" Mealer, 38. If anyone can steer us to a photo of Mr. Mealer, we would be pleased to include it with those of his fallen comrades.

P.S. - A tip of GP's cap to quartermaine for letting us know the jury was back so quickly!

Alright, the Alabama suit is expected to begin soon. I've asked before, but I haven't gotten any new info: what's up with the GTA suit from Tennessee? In that one, they're asking for 246 million dollars.

I hope the judge throws the book at this sicko, and that the lawsuit against Rockstar is tossed...

Hey Jack look! That's real justice! You should look into it more often.

Not surprised. A guilty verdict was definite in this case.

Sidenote: This was a lot faster than Lionel Tate's conviction(jury there only needed 3 hours to convict Tate of first-degree murder).

Alright, so the guy was convicted (after only an hour of deliberations too), awesome! There being 11 women on the jury or no, I'm glad things didn't mire down in this case. Oh, and I loved the Prosecution's closing arguments (as quoted by DM)" He was not crazy. He was mean."!

What upsets me somewhat is the reminder in the above MSNBC article that the victims' families are still filing the civil suit against T2 and R*. You know, the absence of video game testimony is what helped convict your loved ones' killer, and yet you go on another case to sue those companies for the same reasons that got thrown out of court in the first place?

Well, I guess I can't blame them too much - "free money" is free money.

Yeah, I can't fault the families of the officers at all. They've lost their breadwinner in some case, and suffered a horrible tragedy.

Unfortunately for them, this case won't bring them any money. The same judge that presided over the criminal trial is hearing the civil case... And the game industry will NEVER settle this case because of the predecent it would set...

Probably the wrong place to post this, but I've been really enjoying your almost-live coverage of these cases- it's about time somebody actually started covering these events from a gamers' perspective rather than just saying that they've happened and moving on.

Well done.

This is good.

Now, what do you all think he will get for this? A life term of 25 yrs and then he's out in 15 for good behavior? 10 if he finds God? I'm all for helping prisoners find their way to a better life... but there has to be some changes done when you find criminals walk out, just to commit more crimes.

This is a death penalty case. Frankly, that's the only way to get justice from this...
