Why Didn't Illinois Governor Sign the Video Game Law?

In the Peoria Journal-Star statehouse reporter Doug Finke gives his take on why Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich canceled his signing of the "Safe Games Illinois Act," originally scheduled to occur last Tuesdaay in Aurora.

Finke links the cancellation to Blagojevich's desire for maximum media coverage since the legislation was a key initiative for the Guv, who is said to have presidential aspirations in 2008. But, as Finke puts it, "Reality got in the way." Political scandals involving Chicago Mayor Richard Daley hit the news the day before, which meant that much of Chicago's media would be unavailable to cover the signing of the games bill.

Clearly, it was a media coverage issue that led to the cancellation. Here at GamePolitics, we speculated that President Bush's then-pending announcement of his choice for the Supreme Court, to be aired Tuesday evening, might have been seen as grabbing the news cycle away from Blagojevich. As it turns out, the ESRB's Hot Coffee investigation was released on Wednesday, and the Governor will surely not miss the chance to mention the impact of the sex mod when he signs the bill. As Doug Finke reports, GTA: San Anreas was the game that drove Blagojevich to move forward with the legislation in the first place.

Finke also mentions that despite not signing the bill, Blagojevich, whom he describes as "the media-hungry governor," did a spot on the CBS Evening News on Tuesday. The bill must be signed by August 6th, or it will die, so expect action by Governor Blagojevich within the next week.

If video games are so dangerous, why is he taking so long to make the bill law. Why wait for the best media opportunity to "protect the children"?

Obviously, he wants to make a splash. I'm not sure when he signs the bill matters much, since it probably commences as law on a future specified date, not the day he signs it.

That being said, I think your headline is a bit misleading...

"I'm not sure when he signs the bill matters much..." If you're going to run a blog about politics, do you have the option of not being sure about this bill? Seriously, you might want to learn more about what's going on in the legislatures and executive offices of our nation as it relates to video games. All of a sudden your odd coverage of game politics makes sense. You don't know how laws are made or how public debates affect that process.

I'm sorry, but what are you talking about?

I've been pretty clear that he has to sign the bill by August 6th.

My point is that the bill will have a specified date upon which it becomes law.

I'd caution against using rhetorical questions in a forum like this.

Signing to take place on July 25th

I got an e-mail from the original sponsor of the bill, and she says the guv will sign the bill on Monday, July 25th at 12pm (Central time).

I always knew there were political reasons for the governor to postpone the signing of the bill. Here in Illinois, an opponent of the governor (who is going to run against him in the governor's race) has already made commercials criticizing the governor (on other issues), so it shouldn't be a surprise that the governor wants to get this bill signed so that he can create commercials of his own, and undoubtedly refer to this bill.

On another note, it was good hearing Dennis McCauley (of gamepolitics, of course) on that one G4 program, talking about the Hot Coffee mod, and Hillary Clinton's unconstitutional proposal.

But then Leland Yee was on the line in the next segment, and boy, this guy is as foolish as I originally thought. Based on what he says about video games being interactive, I think one can interpret what he says to mean children should have access to porno movies. He said video games should be singled out because they are interactive (or as he put it, the Hot Coffee mod let's the player push buttons and make the girl moan) where movies are passive. Hear that boys and girls? Uncle Leland doesn't mind if you watch porno movies because you can't push buttons and make the girls moan. Leland Yee, one of the biggest morons in the world of politics.

So, tomorrow, then?

I imagine that the ESA will file a pretty quick challenge.

Thanks for the kind words about my G4 spot. I enjoyed it!

Yep, tomorrow. I wrote "July 25th" instead of "tomorrow" in case other people don't see the posting until a later date -I realize each comment has the date as to when it was published, but I wrote the actual date on the subject line to make it easier :)

Coincidentally, July 25th (today!) is also the day I'm getting my wisdom teeth pulled. Figures...

This is what pisses me off. Nobody really cares about protecting the children. They just want to be in the news. Maybe if we give politicians their own 15 minute daily show they'll stop creating stupid bills to get on TV.
