GP on Joystiq - Prez Candidate on Second Life: Smart Move or Political Suicide?

This week's The Political Game examines the long-term political fallout from presidential hopeful Mark Warner's recent campaign stop on Second Life.

Will it help position him as a tech-savvy and youthful candidate? Or will political opponents turn his Second Life visit against him? Should politicians dabble in the gaming realm at all?

Check it out...

Speaking of SL, publisher Linden Lab revealed a major hack attack this week in which user info and credit card data was stolen. That's especially annoying to GP, who just signed up for SL on Monday in order to cover Gov. Warner's next event, scheduled for later this year.

And that's the only reason. It wasn't for the furries, I swear...

I signed up for SL and deleted my account the next day. That game's learning curve is too steep for my liking, and there's nothing to do. I wanted to go to Warner's event, but learning how to play that somehow popular game wasn't worth it.

Exactly! Why not WoW I wonder? He could have compared the war on the horde to the war on Terror, played as a PAL and then lead a huge raid. that would establish him as a war-time candidate and again, WoW is actually a game! Second life is just an excuse for furries to say "Wanna Yiff?".

most of the peope lwho say there's nothing to do in Second Life have typically never looked around. I found go kart racing, gun shootign ranges and paintball games. Bear in mind a ton of the stuff in thatgame is user made, you just need to look aroun and find what you like about the game. Saying Second Life isn't a game is essentially sayign The Sims isn't a game either. As for the shot at furries, most of them woudl join Furcadia for that dumbshit saying. Hell, I'm a Second Life member and I ain't said that once.

I honestly think CERTAIN peopel will condemn his visit. For one, most politicians don't go to this length to interact with future or even current constituents, and 2, it's a video games, as we know it, most politicians don't care for them ,or want them banned. Mr Miami moron will problably say he
s spearheading any attack against this.

Except for reports would indicate that he didn't really "interact" with anyone but the moderator. It would be different if it was held as an open, town hall-style meeting. But, as near as I could tell, it was just two guys in an invite-only room chatting back and forth. Hopefully, that will change in future visits. If IRC can have moderated chat sessions where people submit their questions to the moderator, so can Second Life.

I think Warner scores points for trying something very different here, attempting to appeal to a listening but oft-ignored audience. As time goes on, I believe we'll see that Warner certainly won't be the only candidate to try this. As the "old guard" is slowly eliminated from Washington, more of the tech-savvy newcomers will arrive. Warner does have appreciable business experience in telecommunications and information technology and clearly stands in contrast to the Senile Old Fart from Alaska.

But it's impossible to say if I would support him or not. I have to dig deeper on the Internet to learn more about how he stands on issues. I like the idea of a governor-turned-President, rather than a career Senator like McCain and the like (Bush aside). I like what speeches of his I've read on the Forward Together site.

We are planning out our next event in Second Life now. It will be much more interactive than this was. What would everyone here like to see?

Jakkal. She is the creator of the webcomic Blacktapestries. http:\\www.blacktapestries.com. She is the only other person I know of who has multiple LiveJournal accounts (other than me, and you-know-who). She has one LiveJournal for each of the webcomics she draws. Plus one for herself and one thats just for bitching. Five in all. I have been reading her webcomic for about seven or eight years now.

The only reason I even know of Second Life is because of GP. However, the idea behind it i can guess is at least promising.

Do you have an idea what the second event is?

...every time I see that picture, I always see one of the characters from the Katamari games in the back. That white thing seriously looks like one.

We are looking into doing a more traditional town hall meeting. Specifics haven't been nailed down yet but we would like the event to be more interactive.

If you're referring to the big white thing in the picture I believe that's one of our internet team members who's avatar is a "series of tubes." In honor of another politician.

Thoughts on Second Life...

I'd say second Life is great, but it's got it's problems. For one, all human avatars are butt fugly no matter what you do to them. There's issues with lag, but it's never a constant problem. The building tools are superb and as stated in previous posts, there's all sorts of cool stuff in SL as long as you look for it.

I think this is an interesting move for any politician considering the main Grid of SL is supposed to have a strictly 18+ playerbase (all voters potentially)though it's not always the case since most kids blow off the Teen Grid because they think they're too cool to act like morons with the rest of the morons. So, as you'd expect with anywhere else ont he internet, you often get the overzealous 14 year olds who are constant asking "can i hav sum munee?" or "hey gimee a copy of ur av"

Still a fun game and hopefully stuff like this will further pave a road for the use of the internet in common stuff. The blog-o-sphere doesn't seem to be doing much good anyways.
