The Daily Show Roasts Congress Over Video Game Hearing

This morning, certain members of Congress are probably hoping their constituents don't watch The Daily Show.

Host Jon Stewart laid comic waste to a June 14th Congressional video game hearing in a lengthy segment titled "Player Haters" on last night's show. You can view the program here.

Some Stewart highlights:

"Violent video games were the latest target of Washington's election year ire. Hearings were held to... what, exactly?"

"Who wants to be the first person to sound like an out of touch jackass? Oh, you! Congressman Upton..." (Rep. Fred Upton R-MI)

Mimicking Nebraska Rep. Lee Terry's halting declaration that he was concerned about the game play of his three young sons, Stewart said:

"...and as I... stand there... watching them play these violent games... helpless to do anything about it... I can't help but wonder... where the system has failed..."

Stewart also mocked Rep. Joe Pitts (R-PA) who, in a bizarre opening statement at the hearing, opined that well-to-do suburban kids "can play Grand Theft Auto or similar games without turning to a life of crime but a poor kid who lives in a neighborhood where people really do steal cars or deal drugs... might not be so fortunate."

"Wealthy suburban kids don't do those things," Stewart said, "Like my good friends those Columbine boys... Seriously, the House of Representatives is filled with insane jackasses."

Stewart then cut to a silly stand-up with Daily Show regular Samantha Bee, billed as the programs's "Senior PlayStationologist," reporting from San Andreas. Action from the GTA game was projected behind Samantha as she spoke, saying in part, "Nobody believes there is really a connection (between game violence and real violence). This issue has been resolved in studies. Politicians are just beating a dead hooker here."

GP sends a shout-out to several readers who tipped us off in time to Tivo this one: Kyouryuu, monte924, Ravenousrattle, Dan Zuccarelli, The Jesus and Matthew "Zero Beat" Stange.

By the way UKers, i believe this will be on tonight (8:30PM) in the UK on More4, since they air The Daliy Show the day after it airs in the US.

Well, now that he's gone agaisnt the Polis and idiots like thompson ,i guess we can expect John stewart to be on thompson "sue list" now. Funny, thompson once said he was a big fan, now, I bet he hates Stewarts guts.

Who wants to take bets that Thompson spams a idiotic press release shortly to say that stewart is "In bed with the Video porn industry"?

Anyone? Bueler?

"Seriously, the House of Representatives is filled with insane jackasses."

I seem to recall a recent Blog issue where John Bruce threatened to sue because someone called HIM insane. So I think that one line may suggest John Bruce's next move.

I hope everyone has good flood and earthquake insurance for all the crying and stomping John Bruce will be doing during his fit over that one.

That was wonderful, I watched with open-mouthed awe for most of that segment.

The bottom line is that people are trying to find someone to blame besides themselves. Right now it's Rockstar and MySpace. Tomorrow it'll be Activision and Livejournal.

How about plain ol' parent responsibility? I know I'm beating a dead hooker here (so hilarious!) but if you give your kid unrestricted access to the internet, that's YOUR dysfunction. The internet has porn. The internet has pedophiles. The PARENTS are making that available to kids, not the internet.

I <3 John Stewart.

I wish Jack would go on the Daily Show. Stewart would rip him the shreds.

And then Jack would try to sue him. And get laughed at by a judge, saying "What, did you think that going onto that show would get you NOT made fun of?"

Better yet, have him go on the Colbert report.

By the time it's over he won't know if Steven was with him or against him (the last one when it comes to people like him).

Jack will leave thinking he got his point across and watch it later where he realizes Steven just tore him apart, then you will see soem funny press releases from him.

i know ianc14 posted the time for the UK showing, but if anybody missed it you can catch it again a couple times today. i know it alrwady replayed once this morning but it's supposed to air again at 2PM and again at 8PM, so plenty of time to check it out.

and of course that segment will end up on youtube soon enough. or it may ecen end up on comedycentral.com by day's end.

I shouldn't have to say this, but I will. Mr. Terry? The next time you see your kids playing a violent game, walk over to the T.V. and turn it off. How did the system fail? You bought them the game and let them play it. This is your reswponsibility, not the "system".

This is quite possibly the most stupid thing that I have ever heard. Look at what he has said here. If a kid grows up in a neighborhood where people steal cars and deal drugs, somehow, SOMEHOW, it's still Grand Theft Auto's fault. This is called scapegoating. The negative influence is quite obviously the kid's environment, but this fact is completely ignored. No, we won't deal with that problem, we'll just point at the videogame. When people say this kind of thing it makes me want to rip my hair out.

also if a person lives in the evironment described above he'd probably play video games to "escape". So pretty much grand theft auto would be extremely boring to the kid as opposed to say burnour or final fantasy or zelda or halo.

I saw this last night.

I was good that Stewert was rasing awareness of how stupid the House of Represenitives is being, however there were some things that bothered me about the segment.

Such as saying that all gamers are immature people who refuse to grow up. I know this was a joke, but the sad thing is that most people consider this to be the truth

long time reader, first time poster, I watch the daily show and the o'reilly factor, for video game related legislation, and i really don't care for john stewart or his despicable audience, but every now and then he gets the truth out in an open and honest way and i can respect that. For those who say he schooled o'reilly, you can't really expect to win an arguement when 50 people are booing, and hissing at you it's very distracting

P.S. let the o'reilly factor/daily show fued end, come on people

If I was watching the same segment, they were booing O'Reilly because he was being an ass and trying to do a "dur Frenchies are re-tards" act, seriously that was as bad as a 4 year old trying to do "yo momma" jokes... after Steward wanted to know why he wasn't trying to fry bigger fish.

Stewart was right, France is really a sad target to pick if you're going to be outraged at things... O'Reilly is the one who should drop the whole French bashing shtick, it's getting old.

ps. Welcome to GP! Check out the forums, there's no waiting for unscreeing there. :)

Hah. That was totally worth watching. Heh. Yeah, its good to see all the 'gamers' in Congress. And how they're able to take responsibility for stuff and make sure that violent video games aren't played by kids. Uh... or not.

And I'm also suprised Jacko hasn't been on the Daily Show or the Colbert Report. Eh, maybe he thought they were gamers trying to 'get him' when they called.
