Louisiana Cops Search, Seize Games Based on Thompson's Input

Jack Thompson occasionally seeks to interject his video game theories into criminal investigations of youth violence. Sometimes he succeeds, as in a Louisiana homicide investigation currently being conducted by the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office (WFPSO). West Feliciana Parish is a largely unincorporated area of central Louisiana.

As reported by The Advocate, Thompson suggested to the WFPSO that a murder committed in the parish on Tuesday may have been motivated by video games.

The WFPSO took Thompson's information and used it as a basis to search the home of a 16-year-old suspect in the crime. A police official told the newspaper that deputies seized several M-rated video games from the residence. Captain Spence Dilworth, however, drew no conclusions from his findings.

"I think (the murder) goes beyond video games, but who's to say?," Dilworth commented, adding that the question of whether video games lead to youth violence might be "more of a debate for the living room rather than the courtroom."

The suspect whose home was searched and a 17-year-old accomplice were arrested for first-degree murder and armed robbery on Wednesday. On Thursday a judge ruled that the suspects would be tried as adults. The 16-year-old knew the victim, 55-year-old Michael Gore and lived in a mobile home parked on Gore's property.

Thompson, the controversial antigame lawyer from Miami, told The Advocate on Friday that he suggested the WFPSO look into the video game angle because published reports describing the nature of Gore's wounds "raised a red flag."

According to Thompson, published reports that the 16-year-old confessed to police that he and the other boy killed Gore because the victim would not let him borrow his car followed "the same scenario in Grand Theft Auto."

An autopsy showed that Gore had been shot in the face and beaten.

"Nobody shoots anybody in the face unless you're a hit man or a video gamer," Thompson told the newspaper.

Thompson was in Baton Rouge on Tuesday to testify before a Louisiana Senate subcommittee considering HB1381, video game legislation proposed by Rep. Roy Burrell (D).

I'm sorry, the significance of shooting someone in the face is lost on me.

hmm, I'm not entirely sure but I'm sure if you look back in time Jacky boy you might find other examples of this happening without games involved. didn't the mansons kill one of their victums with a shot to the face?

I was about to comment on that same line. It's probably the most stupid statement he's made as of yet, and quite honestly that's saying something. I wonder if I can sue him for eye-strain, I end up rolling them pretty hard every time he starts making these statements in public.

What a waste of police resources, and it seems that the officer sensed that it was indeed a waste of time.

Though, it raises the possibility that this is nothing more than a publicity stunt by Jack, to make sure that his bullshit bill, reeking of unconstitutionality passes, guaranteeing the waste of taxpayer money that should go towards repairing the damages from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

"Nobody shoots anybody in the face unless you're a hit man or a video gamer," Thompson told the newspaper.

Watch Unsolved Mysteries and America's Most Wanted and get back to reality, Jacky Boy. No surprise here, though, as Jack will say whatever lies he can get away with to justify his worth.

You're a pork rind, Jack. You're what the news media wants when they're stoned and just want garbage.

If the ESA was smart, thompson would be facing a massive lawsuit for this.
"Nobody shoots anybody in the face unless you're a hit man or a video gamer"

Thats auto slander.

1. Linking a known criminal activity to a non criminal activity without any evidance or proof.

2. Written in Print. I correct myself. Liebel suit. No slander. Regardless. It's there, in print, and thus is actionable.

3. The fact that he's spouting off again should be enough for the ESA to finally pursue legal action against him. Hell, it boggles me that the ESA never sued him before this, given his action against DOUG!

I can't wait to see him in court one day.

I must of missed that mission, I don't ever remember a scenario where I asked someone if I could barrow their car.

Or is it talking about the title of the game? you know that crime Grand THeft Auto which involves stealing a car and not barrowing it.

Where was he when that one guy shot the kid for walking on his lawn? The Same Secenario is in GTA.

How about the guy that broke into the liquer store (it was on headline news yesturday)? Same Scenario was in GTA.

How about The Holocaust that hitler started? The Same scenario is in GTA. Oh wait no it wasn't, yet they were shooting people in the face then weren't they?

Hit or miss ratios
[info]nightwng2000
2006-06-03 02:15 pm UTC (link)
Ah yes, the old "it'll be there, you'll see" theories.
And he'll tout it as proof. Of course, as with the studies regarding video game sales to minors, he'll leave out certain details. In the case of the sales studies, he fails to point out that the studies have bee done since the year 2000 and that incidents of selling to minors have actually dropped. In the case of searches, he'll fail to report that in at least 2 cases of his interference in investigations, he's come up empty (the Robida case and that of the planned school shooting where all they found was the Legend of Zelda game, another non-violent game, and computer application Quicken).

Really, with such "hit or miss" techiniques, I should be suggesting that police officers search suspects homes for religious materials where the crime is commited against homosexuals. Or people of a particular race. Or people of a particular religion. Or when it comes to school violence, see if the current suspect was the victim of a bully, then have the police search the homes of the bullies and find religious materials. Gee, I could make up all sorts of theories and using the hit side of my "hit or miss" ratio, like John Bruce, send some serious ripples through either all religious groups or just specific ones. And no one can argue that "religion doesn't harm kids" because no one is brave enough to do the exact same studies that they do regarding video gamers. So I'll just have the actual acts to prove my point. But then, I have a great deal more acts of direct linkage, don't I? "God told me to kill..." "The Bible says to hate all people like..." "My child was possessed by the devil/a demon" My, my. So much to drawn on. And so few, if any, religions that don't have such people in them. Tsk tsk, where to begin, where to begin.

As always, this really isn't finger pointing at my distaste for religion. The negative acts of individuals, whether using or owning certain media or materials, does not necessarily mean that others who own or use that same material are going to commit the same acts. Not everyone who owns a violent video game, no matter what their age, is going to commit a violent act. Not every religious individual who is opposed to Abortion is going to be Eric Rudolph. Not every Catholic (or other religious person) is going to follow in the footsteps of the higher ups in the church and protect priets who commit child molestation. And not everyone in any religion is going to be an extremist to preach bigotry and hate against any group, using lies, deceit, and fraud to prove their claim, the same as John Bruce has done and been proven to do time and time again.

Nor do lawyers, as a whole, do such things either, as John Bruce has. A shame that so many should suffer the negative stereotypes that people like John Bruce foster upon them. So many groups must suffer the negative stereotypes created (whether through actions of an individual or a small group or made up by others) and perpetuated by the small minded.

Humans. Pathetic, just pathetic.

Captain Dilworth's comments suggest to me that they're just doing this to get J. Ron off of their collective ass.

Jack: "This was because of video games! Go to this person's house and take all the video games you find!"
WFPSO: "You're an idiot, we're not doing that."
Jack: "YEAAAARGHBBLE BLARG JESUS GRAN BLERN HARBL LOWENSTEIN GARB FLERG PRESS RELEASE GREBL FRANG HOT COFFEE!!!"
WFPSO: "Alright, alright, we'll get the christing games already. Just shut up."

Yeah, I would not be surprised if Captain Dilworth heard all about the crap Jack said during the Robida investigation, and would rather not have to put up with Wacko Jacko shouting "CONSPIRACY! INCOMPETANCE! SELLING OUT TO THE VIDEOGAME MAFIA!" while he's trying to do a routine murder investigate of a couple of screwed up kids.

From Dumb and Dumber:

Lloyd: What if he shot you in the face?
Harry: Yeah, what if he shot me in the face?

This kind of blatiant bigotry really upsets me. It's this kind of exact action that people like Fred Phelps do on a daily basis. Thompson thinks he isn't heading down the same path as Phelps, I'm begining to see differently. Just because I play GTA or Halo or Timesplitters and can lay down headshots like nobody's business means crap in real life. I have never handled a firearm, nor do I trust myself to be able to handle one. That is something that me and several other people here realize. Jack Thompson does not, to him the two are symonimous.

I once knew a man who would run headfirst into a wall if you gave him a dollar. Jack Thompson makes that look like brain surgery. I will never understand how one person can be so intentionally ignorant in any way. Its truly pathetic and I find it sad that lawmakers and police officers are so busy (or lazy in some cases) that they can't even do a basic google search on this guy to know what a completely nutcase he is. I'm sure in this particular case, they really just wanted a reason, and that was close enough. I really doubt they took any stock in his words, but if it was good enough for a warrant they took it.

Well, to be honest, the paper states 2 sources, one of which 'doubts' JT's accusation, and one of which downright ties bricks to its feet and throws it in a reservoir. Especially considering the article title 'Video Games found in Teens House', which is along the lines of 'Breaking News : Sky is Blue!', I get the feeling the paper itself takes Jack with a few hundredweight of salt.
