Spike Lee Waffles on Violent Scene in Latest Film

It's a case of art imitating... well, other art.

Famed director Spike Lee (Do The Right Thing, She Hate Me) created a video game within his recent film Inside Man as social commentary on just how violent games have become. Then, in a fit of pre-release publicity, Lee expressed concern that someone might rip him off by taking the bloody bits and placing them into a real-world game.

"We found this small outfit that does animation and we thought of the most horrific things we could think of in a video game," he told Ireland On-Line

"We haven't seen a video game with the grenade in the mouth (that explodes). And the sad thing is somebody is probably gonna make a game out of it and take that as inspiration."

Lee is obviously not a fan of the GameCube remake of Resident Evil, then. Or, perhaps Turok's memorable Cerebral Bore weapon.

The director's quandary poses an interesting question about the perception of games as compared to other forms of media. Lee's quote implies that we get to see the grenade-in-mouth incident onscreen. So does Spike believe that this is perfectly suitable content for a film, but not a game? And is this attitude shared by other film directors?

For additional details on how Spike Lee's fictitious game, "Gangstas iz Genocide" was designed, check out this excellent piece by Sheigh Crabtree in the Hollywood Reporter.

(A nod to fellow GP correspondent Andrew Eisen for the game examples)

it's BAD for a game that would be rated mature where it would have a noticable sticker, but it's GOOD for a movie with little-to-no descriptors?

what is this dude nuts or something?

But either way, I don't give a shit what Spike lee thinks. He long ago show'd himself to be a political puppet and nothing more.

he shows the grenade being shoved in the wounded guy's mouth as a comment on needless violence in videogame, if that game actually existed, that same action would not be a comment on anything, it would be like the "wiping blood off your knife" button in Soldier of Fortune 2 or the gasoline weapon in Postal, both of which were included as source of entertainment.

there's some pretty intense violence in films, much, MUCH worse and graphic than those in videogames. but the ones that succeed are the ones what use the violence as a message or provoke emotion. like the "curb" scene in American History X.

i think spike lee's trying to point out the completely pointless violence prominent in today's videogames. there are pointless violence in film too, yea, but at least there are filmmakers who try to balance it out with things more meaningful. and sadly to say, videogame does not. and i'm saying this is a huge game fanatic, i play GTA, FF, RE, SF, EQ, MGS, KOTOR, BG, blah blah blah.

some try, like bioware, offering players chances to make moral decisions within the game, and experience the consequence. but other than that, 99% of the more popular games are still "click, kill, click, kill, click, kill, click, kill".

inside man is a heist film, it could easily be just another shoot-out film with some fun twist and turns, but spike lee takes it and turns it in to a commentary on social classes and race.

why aren't game developers doing this more often? or why isn't there a sense of responsibility to do that? and why aren't there a demand from gamers for it? are we satified solely by pretty physics and lighting effects?

I only have two comments.

1) The American History X example is a great one. Just wanted to give props for bringing that one up.

2) It's getting harder and harder to seperate movie writers from videogames. If you snoop around, you'll find that many game studios are hiring scripters from Hollywood. As an addendum to this point: Final Fantasy 7. Aeris/Aerith death scene. Violent: Yes, Graphic: Yes (especially at the time), Meaningful: Yes. Movies aren't the only ones provoking emotional responses out of it's audience.

In tha Japanese film 'Battle Royale', Kazuo Kiriyama puts a live Grenade into the mouth of Toshimori Oda's decapitated head, and throws it into a house where Shuya, Noriko, and Shougo are hiding.

I have see movies far more graphic then any video games I played in my life, and if putting a grenade in someone mouth is the most horrific thing you could think of in a video game, you need to go back to the drawing board.

I can think of worst in 6 seconds, also involving grenades. Slice the guy's belly and stick a grenade into it.

I can top it. Have a torture minigame in which you jab a guy with a sewing needle repeatedly. Explosions aren't the most horrific thing you can do to a person. Heck, I consider kneecapping worse than a grenade in the mouth. Jackie Chan had one in there in Rush Hour 2, for goodness sakes!

So, er, Spike Lee makes a film for entertainment purposes which features in passing a scene in which a guy has his head blown off in a tragic unexpected grenade eating competition.

Spike Lee also says that you shouldn't make a game for entertainment purposes in which a guy may have his head blown off in a tragic unexpected grenade eating competition.

You Pixelante Knuckleheads (Sorry to Be Redundant) Missed Spike's Point
[info]spikeleerules
2006-04-08 04:27 pm UTC (link)
The point Spike is making in the movie and with his comments about the movie's scene with the violent game is that the games are too violent, and they are emblematic of the irresponsibility of the video game industry.

I am not at all surprised that gamers wouldn't get it; in fact, Spike Lee knows you wouldn't get it, as indicated by his belief that someone will copy the game scene, which is a criticism of the industry. Which, of course, makes his point exquisitely.

It is fascinating, is it not, that the people in this country who have deserved reputations are real artists, real professionals, all decry the recklessness of the entertainment industry and the divorce between art and sanity that prevails in some quarters. Here at GP is one of them.

God bless Spike Lee. He gets it. You at GP don't. Hooah.

You legalantes just don't get it, do you? Spike Lee made a violent film with some clever bits for the purposes of entertainment. He is a pornographer of violence. No doubt he will win awards for it and make more money than we will ever see.

Tarantino is a visionary. Dan Houser (who apparently wrote San Andreas, according to IMDb) is an evil devil-worshipping pornographer.

The shower scene in Psycho is an all-time high point of the culture of film. It's OK; it's fake blood and the knife never goes in. Beating a polygonal hooker to death in a GTA back alley should be banned. It's not OK; it's red pixels and the baseball bat sails straight through her due to clipping errors.

Now on to the customary personal attack. You like to gloat an awful lot for someone who has yet to actually accomplish any of his goals, including but not limited to banning games, banning violent games, destroying Take 2, shutting down Rockstar, and ensuring they don't make any more GTA games.

Oh, and no, it doesn't count as accomplishing a goal because you say you want it and then it happens. You have to actually cause it. As an example, I hereby publically state that I want world peace. If it eventually happens, I'll be sure to take credit for it. Hooah.

Having seen that movie, I think Lee's point was that it's much like Gangsta rap: violent games with these "gangsta" images, peddled to children (in this case, a kid who it is semi-implied may have shot an officer at some point in his life) is contributing to violent atmospheres.

Ironically, Lee undermines his own point when the boy is shown to be from "Brooklyn" with implications of how "hard" such an environment would make a child.

Great movie, I'd recommend it to all-- and the video game scene is a hilarious take on the GTA/Bulletproof/25 to Life gangsta genre.

But in all seriousness, most of Lee's latest movies have been horrible. I havent seen Inside Man yet so I cant exactly judge that yet.

Like many hollywood celebrities,(cough* George Clooney *cough) Lee obviously thinks that because he is famous he is smarter than everyone else. Well if just about all of hollywood would stick their head out of their asses then maybe they would see that no one cares what they think. The only people who do are assholes like Roger "Games are not Art" Ebert and anyone who buys tabloids or crap like that.

Instead he went "I'm gonna talk to your father about exposing you to negative stereotypes and graphic violence."

Jack, you have the worst case of narcissism i have ever seen in my life. I have yet to see you show any empathy on anyone. All you have is disposable allies and enemies you dehumanize.

Your antics are the level of a 7-year old. All you do is make threats and hope someone takes you seriously, then you just keep gloating and claiming yourself the winner (Wikipedia). How can you expect anyone take you seriously after they learn what you are? What is your record, 300 legal threats a day?

I hear a cry for help in this: http://sociopaths.ytmnd.com
Even your subconcious plays tricks on you, and confesses you as a sociopath. So for your own sake, go to a psychiatrist and tell him that you suspect that you have narcistic personal disorder, because at the moment you are your own worst enemy in your cause. You may think that you are already certified sane, but narcissism is not easy to recognize in a short period of time, because you keep everyone from reaching your empty core. Even you can't do that, so you need help. It's also a fact that people suffering from narcissism can't bring them self to admit that they might be sick, so prove me wrong, what do you have to lose? No-one will ever have to know.

I've had a friend who turned out to be a narcist, and I can tell you, when you meet one you've met 'em all...you're nothing special.

Wouldn't it just be bizzare if the portrayal of violent videogames in the media actually corresponded to real videogames that actually existed.

Of course, if he made a violent videogame scene that resembled the violence in real games, people might notice how it pales in comparison to the violence seen in movies all the time. And we can't have that, can we?

Yeah, who the hell uses Spike Lee to defend a position. Just look at his photo, it just screams 'Vapid, self absorbed, no talent cockwhore.' WHY would a sensationalised, over the top scene in a Hollywood movie (I don't want to say blockbuster, because it's SPIKE GODDAMN LEE!) be a valid defense of he-who-shal-not-be-named-because-he's-Jack-'The-Hack'-Thompson's position?
