Mario Question Box Girls Will Not be Prosecuted

Earlier this week, GamePolitics reported on a bizarre case in which six teenage girls were questioned by police after leaving gold-wrapped boxes with question marks painted on the sides outside various public buildings in Ravenna, Ohio. The boxes mimicked those found in the old Super Mario Bros. game for the NES.

As reported by the Akron Beacon-Journal, Portage County Prosecutor Victor V. Vigluicci said the girls "The girls were imitating an art project they found on the Internet. None of the girls had any prior contacts with the police or juvenile court and are all good students. I do not believe that they had any bad or malicious intentions, (but) were not thinking about the consequences of their actions in this day and age."

The girls will write letter of apology to each of the public safety agencies which responded (but not, apparently, to Mario, Luigi or Princess Peach).

what are they apologising for? It looks as though the terrorists have won as we are doomed to be a nation without culture or freedom of expression.

This is really inexcusable.

Agreed. Why should they have to apologize for the overreaction of the whole town. As much as I'm glad that someone had enough sence to say that these girls shouldn't be taken to court the fact that they have to make an apology is stupid.

Well it is good to hear they will not be facing criminal charges, the world we live in is so fucking paranoid and over reacting it isn't funny. Any box on the side walk now is a "potentinal" weapon of terrorism, it is a yellow box with question marks on it for christ sake! What did the Riddler place the boxes outside to screw with Batman again? The Carls Jr. over by my house had to be evacuated because someone left their duffle bag in their seat as they went to the rest room, didn't take long for some 80 year old lady to think "OMG Terrorism!" she told the manager the man ran out the store and he had everyone leave the building and called police. >.< I was in the middle of eating damnit! Luckyly when the guy came out of the bathroom the cops showed up, after 5 minuets of talking to the guy they found out the real reason they had been called. The old lady was fucking nuts and off her medication -.-, yeah it fucking sucks what happened back on 9/11 and it pisses me off to no extent but if we keep letting ourselves be this paranoid about eveything we are giving into the main essence of terrorism...terror.

it is nice to see that a rational mind saw that they meant no harm, but I have to disagree with the idea of writing a letter of apology. yes, they may have set the local DHS level to red for an afternoon, but I can't see them as having done anything wrong. foolish maybe, but wrong? no.
and, last I checked stupidity wasn't something you apologised for, it was something that was rewarded. my opinion is that at least one of those letters should read "my bad.", as apparently that's all you need to apologise for doing something stupid.

This reminds me of something that happened in my town a couple years ago. It was April 1st, and some kids (that now, oddly enough, are regulars at the coffee shop I work at...) ran around hanging up flyers that said something along the lines of "All your base are belong to us. You have no chance to survive make your time."

And then promptly got arrested. After Chief Ali called the FBI...

Once again, even before the terrorists, they would have probably gotten in trouble -- because they were leaving packages outside of public places, like courthouses. It's like yelling fire in a theater and claiming it was to make an artistic statement of the irrational reactions people have.

All that 9/11 and all of this war on terrorism did was increase the amount of reaction/response to this, not the response in entirety. I'm not saying the response was good (it was a bit overdone with the whole calling of the bomb squad), but the girls probably should have rubbe a couple brain cells together when deciding to do this, and picked intelligent locations to make the statement.

I'm glad the kids didn't get arrested or charged with anything. Apology letters are nothing. "I'm sorry you people have no sense of humor" works.

I had a similar situation happen to me last year.

I fly model rockets as a hobby. I also have my own company that sells kits and parts. Its not ALOT of money, but it supports me and my wife.

Well, we went down to the park down the street to fly. We have my niece and nephew with us, who were visiting from another state. So, we started flying.

4 1/2 hours later, there were suddenly copys EVERYWHERE around us with guns drawn. The kids started screaming. My poor niece was so frightened, she curled up into a ball and was crying hysterically, while my disabled wife and I were handcuffed at gunpoint.

Someone called in and said we were shooting missiles at airplanes.

And the worst part of this is... we can't sue anybody. The lawyers said that the cops acted appropriately "for the times we now live in."

So I know exactly how these girls feel.

Fair punishment for stupid acts.
[info]nightwng2000
2006-04-07 10:37 pm UTC (link)
Responsibility is the key.

Overreaction? They turned out to not be dangerous, so, yes, we can claim "overreaction". What would we have claimed if someone called in their concern about suspicious items and there was no response? What would we have called it if there was no response, and the items exploded doing only minor structural damage? What would we have called it if no one responded to the concerns and the items exploded on a small scale and injured a few people? Or killed 1 or 2 people? What would we have called it if there was no response and they turned out to be major explosive devices?

No, they didn't do any of that. But the probability exists that they could have. And what WOULD people be screaming then?

If there had been no 9/11, no London subway bombing, no overthrow of Iraq, no occassional threats by Osama or others, then maybe, just maybe, the authorities could have laughed it off as a stupid prank. But we DO live in these times. And as stupid an act as it seems now, afterwards, it was right to have the concern when they were discovered.

An apology? Some kids with toy guns have been shot by cops in the past because the toy gun was mistaken for a real one.
An apology? This incident may be remembered, but it won't affect them legally, especially once they turn 18.
An apology? They should thank their lucky stars they aren't labeled as troubled teens and dumped into a juvenile detention center for even a few months.

Yes, an apology. Take responsibility for having done something stupid and then move on with their lives.

Actually I do agree with you, an apology was a little too lenient. Maybe if it was in their neighborhood among friends, or just strewn about trees like pinatas, maybe that would've been apology worthy as I'd see plenty of overreacting on the states side in dealing with something like that, but they were large boxes with question marks on them put outside some government buildings. Even if the reference was noted, it was still suspicious, and they still should've gotten at least a few days in a cell just to scare them a bit and put it on their records. I see that they would now understand their situation, but maybe not wholly the consequences of such actions. If they were going to do this, they should've picked a better area at the very least.

The reason the girls were wrong because they didn't ask the town if they could do that. If the girls had bothered to ask the town if they could do this art project, non of this crap would of happen.

I think this situation was handled very well. he girls essentialyl did littering, graffitti and they never asked the town or the locations if they could put up their 'art project'; all of which can be criminal charges.

I watched the whole episode. At first, it was investigated that way, but it turned out to be a red herring that had zero to do with gaming. The mathematical genius found:

-using the victims' times of death, he figured out there was a third shooter.

-the third shooter, instead of randomly shooting people, deliberately chose her targets(passing by students running toward the door), and by hacking into the school's PDA system that was used to call roll and tells where any student is on campus, knew where her targets were.

-the third shooter turned out to be a reporter for the school newspaper, who was roofied and raped at a party(a party that the neighbors complained to the cops about excessive noise) because of an article she wrote about steroid use among athletes. She planned the shooters because it would be her word against theirs, as the athletes were big men on campus. Her targets included the girl that threw the party and invited her, the skateboarder who supplied the drugs used to roofie her, and the captains of the football and swim teams because they were among several who watched as the captain of the wrestling team raped her.

Postscript: The captain of the wrestling team was arrested for the third shooter's rape because the FBI found that someone had a photo of it on his cell phone.
