GP Regular Shows NIMF's David Walsh Gamers Are People, Too

GP regulars know him as YukimuraSanada, a knowledgeable, friendly face - and sig - around the comments area of GamePolitics.

To Dr. David Walsh of the National Institute on Media and the Family, however, he's Matthew Metzo, a gamer whose recent letter to Walsh impressed the NIMF founder with its sincerity. Walsh, of course, is not especially favored in the gaming community, thanks in large part to his efforts to limit violent content in games, his work with notables like Senators Hillary Clinton and Joe Lieberman on video game issues, and his role in moving last year's Hot Coffee scandal from an Internet story to a mainstream media sensation.

As Yuki told GP, "Maybe we can use this to show that gamers can have a voice. Just something cool. To be honest, I never expected him to answer, so his response was a welcome suprise."

Here's what Walsh had to say about our pal Yuki in the latest edition of his MediaWise column, which appears in three dozen newspapers (sorry, no links yet) and is distributed in many school districts across the country. The column is titled "Gamer is Not a Dirty Word":

"One morning a few weeks ago, I opened my inbox and found an e-mail from a man named Matthew Metzo. Like a lot of people who send me messages, Mr. Metzo is an avid video game player, or, as he puts it, a gamer.

"...his letter asks me to help 'those of us who are tired of being judged because of something we choose to do as a hobby.' His concern: with all of the negative attention on video games, the term gamer 'is rapidly becoming derogatory.' Although, Mr. Metzo admits he had not always agreed with the stands I've taken in the past, I was struck, even touched by his letter..."

"I can see why Mr. Metzo is concerned... Suddenly, it seems that nearly everyone who cares about children has something to say about video games. And most of the time these people don't have many positive things to say. As I've said for years, some video games, especially ultraviolent and killographic games and certain industry practices deserve some public condemnation..."

"And with so much money to be made, some in the industry often seem to lose sight of their public responsibility to protect children. As I've said before, however, there are a lot of very good video games. The term video game shouldn't be derogatory, and the term 'gamer' shouldn't be a dirty word either."

"Criticizing the people who play video games for the irresponsibility of some in the industry is nothing more than guilt by association. Millions of people - hardworking, responsible adults and healthy, happy kids - play good video games."

"Censorship and demonization are not the answer. If we antagonize thoughtful, reasonable people, we'll only make it harder to reform a flawed industry and protect our kids. We'll never find 'the better way, the more effective way, to allow both freedom and responsibility to co-exist,' that Matthew Metzo hopes for in his letter... gamers are people like us. Some of them are probably the people we love.
"

GP: Unlike another well-known video game critic, we've always found David Walsh respectful of gamers. Beyond that, it's great to see members of the game community such as Yuki reaching out to what some might consider the "other side" - and to see the othe side accepting the olive branch. Nice job, Yuki...

Props to yuki for saying what he felt needed to be said and although i dont agree with a lot of the anti gamers i can see that walsh can and will show respect to gamers unlike a lot of people.

and it is true the word "gamer" is basically being looked at now as a terrorist of some sort.

Im proud to have Yuki as a buddy

This is totally awesome. My applause to both Yuki AND Walsh. It's great to see that he DOES understand why/how gamer is becoming somewhat derogatory in everyday life, because of lowlifes like Thompson. I'm happier than ever that Walsh distanced himself and can prove himself receptive to all sides of the situation.

Sometimes, I start doubting that anyone on the "other side" would ever respond with anything resembling Civility. Dr. walsh not only responded in a civil way, but took to heart my complaint. It's encouraging to see that perhaps there can be a civil and productive debate about the issue, rather then having the industry and goverment fighting each other every month in court.

Now, if only we could do away with imbeciles like Thompson, things would get going in the right direction.

Thanks again dennis.

Congrats Yuki. Excellent Job. Not only does this show that there are reasonable people on the "other side", it goes to show what we have been saying all along. Gamers are not whacked out drug addicts. Most of us are productive members of society, and as such, can contribute so much more to finding a solution to the problems that are currently plaguing the industry. Good Job. Because of you we may now be able to open some much needed lines of communication and actually solve this problem. Way to go!

It's a nice shirt, although I wish the image was printed darker. As it is, whenever the shirt stretches, it looks more grey than black, and I have a feeling that it will fade quickly in the wash. Still, I'm glad I got it :)

Hey, don't look at me, I'm quilty of the crime of never getting the chance to see firefly when it was on due to work. As it stands, I'm playing elder scrolls Oblivion, which, In my opinion, it proof beyond doubt, that games can be art. Add it to Shadow of the Colosus.

But, Thanks to all the GP regulars for your support. Won't lie to you all, this was a bit of good news for me in a time of increasingly heaver stress and sadness, mainly due to my fathers condition, his upcoming surgery, his 4 in 6 months, and my own health, which for the last few weeks, was not good.

Dennis, thanks for this, if nothing else, it reminds me that there is some civility and intelligence left in this debate, and perhaps when all the shouting and stupidity has died down, rational voices will rise up to find a real solution.

Thanks to all gp for supporting me. Now then, back to the Games.

Is Best Buy threatening to pull your funding? It's great how you managed to find the one Pixelante who can force out a semi-civil letter without resorting to death threats. You should the kind of mail I get from these Hitler Youth wannabes. These nutjobs claim to be adults, but the only other group of adults I know that resort to such tactics is the Mafia. Curious how games about organized crime are so popular now...

Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and EB claim to enforce ESRB ratings in their sales, but as the Harvard study (Also known as the second-to-last-nail-on-the-game industries-coffin study) has shown, even that cartel cannot be trusted. Rockstars strategy of lying to public is starting to back fire on them. This will not stand. I promise you who call yourselves adults, that in one year, Rockstar will be bankrupt, and I'll be the one responsible for making them wake up and smell the hot coffee of reality. Hooah! Jack Thompson

PS. I hope you're all looking forward to some big news from me. Rockstar is going to feel this one where in hurts... in the wallet!

Maybe I'm reading a bit into things here, but it seemed like he was distancing himself from those playing "bad" video games. Granted I know that ties in with his job, but maybe he could've said that not everyone playing the games he considers bad is bad. Or maybe I'm just looking too far into the omission of that.

You know, I wrote Dave Walsh too once or twice just after their "parent alert" regarding Hot Coffee. This was back when I had some respect for NIMF, so I was rather cheery, and offered up quite a bit of info on how pervasive dodgy mods are. I also put forward a handful of ideas they could use to teach parents how to look out for such things, and in some cases block off modding with simple security steps (limited user accounts for kids, read/write perm's, etc..).

Did they bother following up on any of it to actaully help parents understand modding? Nope. For someone who claims to care about gamers and parents, he really doesn't seem to give a flying fark. But, then how would he be able to fearmonger about the nasty vid'ya games, and push for the use of his buddies' ratings system without sensational stories like Hot Coffee?

For once, I have to agree with Jack Thompson on something. Dave Walsh is a fake.

You know Ill, writing him during Hot coffie was probably not a good bet. Lets face it, he was probably getting slammed from all sides and from every angle back then. Also ,Walsh has already publicly said he's not supporting PSV ratings.

Now, on the Modding thing, yeah, your right, he messed up, but So did most of the industry by how they handled that whole debacule. That he takes the time to responded to us at all is proof that, unlike jack, He does care about something other then money and personal fame.

He's not perfect, by no means, and I told him that I don't always agree with him in my letter, but regardless, the fact that he's willing to say something about how games and the people who play them have been demonized is a step in the right direction. One you will note, Jack never took.

So give the man a break.

There's a refreshing letter. Now I want to email him too. Way to go Yuki, you Warrior in Red you.

I want to slip part of a rant in here too, so I shall. He's got a point about censorship. That's what legislation is, plain and simple. It's not a tool. A tool is something you can choose to use and are aware of and if you complain about it not being there then you're just ignorant. When you make something law its not a tool, its the government making you use something, and both ignorance and defiance are punished. Now, with something that can cause thousands of fatalities a year (this is the number 0. This is how many people died last year because they played video games and it told them to go shoot people) such as as car accidents and seatbelts, not no mention restrictions on the legal drugs like cigarettes and alcohol.

I would like to offer my congratulations to you Yuki, and I'm glad to see Dr. Walsh take the tact he did on the subject. I wish more in the anti-gamer camp thought the same way. I just got done with a class for my job and the instructor it turns out is a gamer as well. We got talking about games and this very subject came up. Unfortunately, thanks to idiots like jack thompson, the term "gamer" seems to have come a very derogatory remark in the eyes of the non-gaming public. We were sharing stories of the kinds of looks and remarks we get when non-gamers found out we were and the one we got the most is that look of what seemed like disdain or disgust. It's a shame that people feel that way about people who enjoy a simple hobby.

Yeah, It's gotten to the point where I wanna not go outside anymore to avoid wanting to destroy those people who look down on me. That being said, Dr. Walsh stunned me with his reply. I was never expecting such a response. Not that I have any issue with walsh personally, just, historicly, there was no attempt by either side to find a middle ground. Walshs actions are a great step in the right direction IMO.

Now the question is, will others, industry and critics alike, take the next step towards ending the conflict that now is being fought in courts, and coming together to find a real solution?

We already know Thompson won't, cause he's to concerned about his pocketbook and molesting grieving families for money by filling doomed lawsuits.

Okay, maybe Yuki's not the only one to write Walsh in a civil manner, but his letter got through, darn it, so it's Yuki we're celebrating today.

Hip hip hooray~!

Wasn't a matter of getting through so much as it was a matter of finding a topic that would strike a cord with Dr. Walsh. 1000 "OMG JOO R THE SUCK" isn't gonna do any good. But, I thought maybe he'd understand what it's like to be persecuted for something you do as a hobby, or with good intentions. Look at the stuff Nimf gets from entertainment groups. I figured he'd understand that feeling of frustration.

Anyway, Thanks Ryan, and keep up the great work at Get well gamers. I admire you have the decency to handle it. Expect me to buy a Tshirt to help support ya

It's about damn time someone had the balls to be reasonable in this fight. I commend Dr. Walsh as much as I disagree with him.

He's right though, no one is going to solkve the problem if gaming becomes as criminal as drugs and real violence. It's a wierd societal effect that whatever has a "no" in front of it, whatever is taboo in society, suddenly becomes the "cool" thing to do. It becomes a sign of degeneracy and is frowned upon and I would hate to see games, or any form of entertainment to become something like that.

I'll post a really good response when I get to work.

And creds to Walsh as well. I may not agree with his standings, but I certainly have a lot of respect for him, because he has so much of it for us all and all other people.
This certainly brightens my heart!

Nice job actually getting someone like Walsh to respond with something non-agressive, but hes kind of hypocritical in his response. He says in one of the paragraphs, "Censorship and demonization are not the answer. If we antagonize thoughtful, reasonable people, we'll only make it harder to reform a flawed industry and protect our kids". Then earlier in the response he says, "As I've said for years, some video games, especially ultraviolent and killographic games and certain industry practices deserve some public condemnation...And with so much money to be made, some in the industry often seem to lose sight of their public responsibility to protect children". As I see it, and from his past statements, this was probably just a lie so he could get gamers off his back (people who bad mouth video games get alot of e-mails as you all know, and various other contact from gamers, and they see it as an annoyance). The way he wants it, like all the others, is to spread the lie to all the non-gamers in this country that what we do is a waiste of our lives, and is hurting and diseasing us, turning us into angry, violent people. Especially when it comes to this whole protecting the children thing, with him saying a while back that kids who play violent games are going to grow up being violent and agressive. Not to rant or anything like that, but I'm only 14 years old and I play tons of violent games and have been since around the time I was a little kid. During this whole time of gaming, I've always been the same, which is very kind and caring. And even though I get angry sometimes like every other human being on this planet, I've never hurt anyone or anything like these so-called experts have been claiming a young gamer would do. As I see it, your either with us or against us. And even though Walsh claimed he dosen't want to attack gamers and wants to find a peaceful way out of this so-called "epedemic problem", I do beleive that hes like everyone else, and wants Video Games to be censored and in simple words, destroyed.

I disagree. While he may not like the violent games, nor does he like some of the industry practices, He's never come out in favor of outright censorship. he does feel the industry needs to act more responsibly, and with better policy enforcement, but he's not like thompson. He knows better then to try and attack A billion dollar industry.

Walsh is one of the few, the ones who want to solve problems instead of censor speech.

Don't lump him in with the likes of thompson.
