Mr. Yee Goes to Washington

No, it's not a re-make of a Frank Capra film.

Assembly Speaker pro Tem Leland Yee, architect of California's contested video game law, has accepted an invitation to testify later this month before the Senate Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Property Rights.

Yee was asked to appear by Senators Russ Feingold (D-WI) and Sam Brownback (R-KS). The hearing, listed as "State Regulation of Violent Video Games and the First Amendment," will feature a variety of nationally recognized political, legal and medical figures.

"I look forward to working with Congress as they examine legislation to protect children and families," said Yee. "Clearly, violent video games have become a national issue and I applaud Congress for taking a serious look at ways we can help parents raise healthier kids."

In addition to Brownback (Chair) and Feingold (Ranking Minority Member), the Subcommittee consists of Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Ted Kennedy (D-MA), Richard Durbin (D-IL), Arlen Specter (R-PA), Lindsey Graham (R-SC ), John Cornyn (R-TX), and Tom Coburn (R-OK).

The hearing is scheduled to take place on March 29, 2006.

I have something to say to people like you Yee
here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xz7JusSwfOQ

You cannot control what we can and cannot play, We are adult gamers, we have the right to choose what to buy, we have the right to choose what our children play.

Actually, they can control it, but not legally (unless they change the Constitution). But you can refuse the control. It's like the prohibition in the 20s. You can prevent the sales of alcohol. But people can decide to break that control. There never was more alcohol flowing in the States then in Al Capone's Golden Days.

Please, that takes too much effort. I mean, having to turn over the box, and, worst yet, READ the ratings? Ha! Too much effort for the new wave of parents we're getting.

My mom's excuse for buying my younger brothers GTA games: "It's not like they don't see it on TV anyway."

Why not examine legislation about violent sports instead?
[info]verbinator
2006-03-15 03:28 am UTC (link)
For every crime suggesting that it might be related to "violent video games" a researcher could probably uncover a dozen or more actual crimes commited by players of real life sports at all levels (amateur to professional). This should be a national issue. We need to ban the play of these sports now and limit who is allowed to play them and see them played.

Tongue coming out of cheek now.

If you are an American of voting age. Register to vote and deal with the problem at the voting booth. Send the sponsors of these bills back to lives in the private sector.

It's been a while since I've studied governments and so forth. I thought Pro Tem was a temporary position, or a secondary one (such as a vice president is to a president). However, Yee has been in the spotlight and in his position for so long, that I assume I'm incorrect.

What does Pro Tem mean in this case?

Pro Tem roughly temporary.
President pro tempore of the United States Senate is elected by the majority and functions as the President of the Senate in case the Vice President is unavailable (in Cheney's case new health problem).

I would imagine since: Yee is the speaker pro tempore of the assembly, making him the second highest ranking Democrat in the State Assembly. He is the second in command in the California Assembly, how specifically CA legislature bodies work I am unsure. Most state governments in the US are modeled similarly to the federal.

"I look forward to working with Congress as they examine legislation to protect children and families," said Yee. "Clearly, violent video games have become a national issue and I applaud Congress for taking a serious look at ways we can help parents raise healthier kids"

Once again it goes back to this whole "lets help out parents and just regulate games that way they wont have to say no to their child" How about instead these people who dont give half a rat's ass about caring for their kid Just not have any...I can understand they want this status simble and look that says "ohhh look i have kids i have kids" its bullshit

Whats next after they regulate they decide "hey we should also regulate these games from adults who play them" Im waiting for that day to happen since it seems like its coming with the way these people show their stupidity. This bullshit they are trying to do is not the answer..Instead what they should do is open their mouths and simply tell these parents.."Open your fucking eyes Games rated M for mature shouldnt be in the hands of your kids unless you know whats in them and you think they are mature enough to handle it and if you dont like that idea then how about you dont go to a fucking video game store you stupid bitch".

Im aware there are parents who actully do pay attention and actully oh i dont know parent their child.but there is a bigger amount who would rather just go and buy Manhunt for little billy because after all nothing is more important then 5 minutes of peace and quiet.

Sometimes i want to ask these people why the hell they have kids if they cant even be a parent.what the hell do they think that once the kid pops out that there job is done? cause that seems to be how some of them think

i swear we have to many dumbasses on this planet..

We just need to get rid of the "video games are harmful" mentality. It's hard to do when we're still telling them they shouldn't buy certain games for their kids. We're sending dual messages. Parents should be aware of the content of the games, but they should be the ones making that decision, not politicians, not retailers, not the ESRB, not casual observers.

I just hope there's at least some impartiality in the speakers they choose. I would love for Henry Jenkins or Gerard Jones to address the committee.

It has only become a national issue because politicians (and whackos like our belived Jack) have decided to make it a national issue. Clearly the politicians are trying to come up with new issues for people to stand behind/against, because they probably think we're all tired and bored with the existing (and still unresolved) issues at hand.

I got to interview Yee a few months ago and found him to be a lot more reasonable than most of the politicians trying to pass video game legislation. I mean, the guy's got a background in child psychology and is trying to handle the whole situation in a rational way... my problem with his arguments is that he's basically asking the government to step in and do a job parents are supposed to.

I'm originally from San Francisco, and the whole violent video game issue is way less of a political hot button than it is around the rest of the country, so it seems like Yee's bill from last year and his motivations are more driven by a desire to help people rather than secure voter approval... but, again, I'm not agreeing with him, one bit. Congress has better things to work on: clothing the naked, feeding the hungry, and banning gay marriage (kidding!), for example.
