ESA Launches "Video Game Voters Network"

According to a press release this morning from the ESA:

"The "Video Game Voters Network", a new grassroots political network for gamers, officially launched today at www.videogamevoters.org. The website was created as a means for American adults who play computer and video games to organize and take action on important policy issues affecting the computer and video game industry.

'Computer and video games represent one of the most important new media developments of this generation. Unlike many other forms of entertainment they offer players the opportunity to explore, be creative, learn through interaction and express themselves to others,' said Will Wright, Chief Designer at Maxis. 'It is vitally important that we protect and nurture this new art form so that it can reach its full potential. Like most new forms of artistic expression that have come before (music, novels, movies), the primary critics of video games are the people that do not play them.'

The Video Game Voters Network opposes efforts to regulate the content of entertainment media, including proposals to criminalize the sale of certain games to minors, or regulate video games differently than movies, music, books, and other media. The site, a project of the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), enables gamers to stay updated about these and other game industry related issues, to register to vote, and to take action by contacting federal, state, and local officials to express their views. Gamers over 18 years old can join the Network and/or send a letter to policymakers at www.videogamevoters.org.

'With over seventy bills to restrict game sales to minors already pending in state legislatures across the country this year, it's time for gamers to make their voices heard loudly and clearly, to let politicians know that they will no longer stand by and let games be the scapegoat for larger social problems,' said ESA president Doug Lowenstein. 'Gamers can join together through the Video Game Voters Network to send a strong message to politicians to let them know that gamers care, that they vote, and that they will no longer tolerate these unconstitutional, unnecessary, and uninformed attacks on this important form of entertainment.'

GP: We've been critical of the ESA - as recently as yesterday - but must give credit where it's due and applaud Doug Lowenstein and his people for this initiative.

That is great news. Independent sources like GP and PixelanteNation have done a good job of organizing gamers and encouraging us to take action, but it's encouraging to see the guys at the very top acknowledge that we matter and that we are needed. I hope the response in the gaming community is immense.

Hallelujah! This is something that's been long overdue. Finally a place we can go to that will give us some kind of political weight. At the very least, it'll let the politicans know we are there and give the ESA a tangible voter block they can point to.

Yes, the idea of the "Gamer vote" may seem laughable, but given today's climate I'd say it's worth a shot. Hopefully this is the first step in going on the offensive as Geoghagen and Yuki have recommended. I'm signing-up now!

This is what we really need. Most adult gamers are a political power to be reckoned with. The sooner the politicians learn this the better. I think Tom Buscaglia once said that something like this should be formed.

I wonder how long before Jackie starts harrasing this site!

With regards to what Wright said, that's something I've been trying to advocate for a while now, the media side of videogames, the fact that videogames ARE an artform, rather than simply a form of entertainment. And if we let people censor it now, who knows how it'll turn out. And now for a shameless plug of my own website.

So, is this like a new lobbyist group, like the ones for cigarettes and movies? Will we have political sway and power? Could this backfire, and split the industry between members and non-member? I'd like to see more information about this.

Hmmm... I'm not one to jump on the band wagon so fast I guess... The ESA is an organization designed to make sure that the INDUSTRY gets what it wants, not gamers... If the RIAA were to start such a site would any of y'all join it? I didn't think so...

To me this seems likes a quick way for the ESA to get us to do it's dirty work... I'm sending the form letter, until I can craft one of my own, simply to make my reps aware of my feelings...

It's been mentioned here already, but just in case you missed it I highly endorse Pixelantenation.com and the Elctronic Gaming CONSUMERS Alliance organization they/we are attempting to build... We should make allies to some extent with the ESA for now, but always remember they represent the INDUSTRY and not us... They will backstab us first chance they get...

Good points. But if it would help tide the wave of unconstitutional idiotic retardo video game regulation, then i'm all for it. Once they start screwing us over by trying to ban us from making legitimate backup copies of our bought and paid for games (sort of what like the RIAA is doing) then it's time to jump ship.

"Unlike many other forms of entertainment they offer players the opportunity to explore, be creative, learn through interaction and express themselves to others,"

This is a quote taken from the article. It is pure bull. If someone wants to explore, be creative and learn through interaction and express themselves, get off of the games, go outside, and mingle in the real world. I have as of yet to meet a hard core gamer who was able to apply anything he/she learned in real life, until they left the games, started spending time in their real life and practiced these behaviors there.

Gaming is an escape from real life, not an enhancement to it. If you want to enhance your real life, you have to be in it.

"Unlike many other forms of entertainment they offer players the opportunity to explore, be creative, learn through interaction and express themselves to others," said Will Wright, Chief Designer at Maxis.

But I believe the quote was in reference to other forms of media entertainment, mostly television or movies. Wright is the founder of the Sim-franchise, and there are many, MANY fansites centered around his games. They are made specifically so players can and are encouraged to modify and create their own items, buildings and people then trade them around with others.

I'll agree with you on the escapist comment also. Escapism, in and of-itself, seems to be something nobody is really focusing on.

The problem I see with this is the fact it is the ESA that is sponsoring the movement... The desire of the ESA is more to protect the industry interest then the gamers, therefor I see this as a appeasement technique on the gamers while giving them leverage for negotiation on the part of the industry.

The gaming industry is like all the other industries, their goal is to make money. And legislation is not helping them make money. They couldn't care less about freedom of speech.

On their legislation watch, they only have four laws that are waiting to be passed. They should probably add a link to this site and host your map.

This is why I love this site and why I'm glad I have gamepolitics added as my LJ friend.

I think it falls on us, in part of this grasswork level strategy, to try and promote this as much as possible. We need to let our senators know we aren't happy with how our entertainment medium is targeted.

Our First Amendment is one we can't take lightly. There's a reason its the First Amendment, not the 27th. Its the one that we use every single day of our life; that allows us to operate as free citizens. I signed up at the site and it automatically sent the email; quick and painless.

In some states, it might not matter because the Senators will either be for or against this simply because of their party, but it does matter to have your voice heard.

Indeed. Aside from games which are loaded with puzzles, such as RPGs or just puzzle-games in general, and strategy games, there are few that don't encourage multiplayer mode or online play. In you are forced to think with RPGs, strategy games and puzzlers, it isn't just mindless *insert thing here*.

Im glad that the ESA is stepping up, but i see that its in the interest of the companies more. However that does include the interest of the consumers, though for good or bad is in question.

The comment by Liz does strike me. She does bring a point, and yet NAHAT brings the point that counteracts.

My point would be that its a game. People take things seriously, just as they do in sports, but do we see them as a problem? No, but we do when it involved video games.
