Change to Comments Policy at GamePolitics

Since GamePolitics went live last March, we've endeavored to have a free flow of viewpoints in our comments section, unfettered by too many restrictions. Thus we have always allowed anonymous postings.

Some recent developments have caused us to rethink that policy. Therefore, effective immediately, a Live Journal account is required to post comments on GP. You can create your own free LJ account here.

Not to worry, though. You'll pick a screen name, so you can still retain your anonymity. Registration is accomplished entirely through LJ. GamePolitics will not have your e-mail address or any other information about you.

We hope you don't find this too inconvenient.

By the way, as mentioned before, we will be moving to a non-LJ format in the next few months. For more details on the planned changes, click here.

Thanks dennis, you did the right thing. I know how you feel, and I feel the same, but at some point, enough is enough. I do hope you will continue to help us in our efforts against jack thompson by providing us the info we need to get the Florida Bar to shut him down, but enough is enough, he needs to stopped, and a good start would be for you to collect everything he sends, and put it in a readily avalible archive for us to keep track of.

Anyway, thanks dennis, for putting the lid on Jack Thompson. To all other Gp anons, sorry that it came to this. But, as with much, Blame Jack.

Kudos to you Dennis. I really do think that this is a good thing for GP.

IMHO we also need the forums back up and running again ASAP. The forums should help cut down on the huge number of comments posted here. Don't get me wrong it is great that more and more people are frequenting and posting comments here on GP however I must admit that it can be a bit daunting sometimes when you have 500 + posts to read through.

Hopefully now we won't have so many trolls and anonymous idiots.

Now for the other trolls you'll get lower amounts, but still decent.

Thanks, Dennis.

On the plus side, anyone who posts with an account can be held accountable for their comments and are easier to track than the anonymous posters.

Over the past couple of days Jack Thompson went from being an amusing fruitbat to a bitter, hateful old man. GP put the lid on him just as I was reaching my breaking point.

Of course he'll complain about this elsewhere, calling Dennis whatever names he can and spewing out his 'press releases'. But at least he's cut off from causing chaos here.

And if he does get a LJ account, good for him. He'll have his own space to post whatever he wants.

This might inconvenience the small percentage of commentors that use OpenID to comment from a different blog site like GreatestJournal. But, since it's your blog, we really don't have much of a say in the preferred method of posting. :)

A lot of people seem to forget that. Oh, it also takes five minutes to create an LJ user name (taking longer if you don't receive the confirmation email right away).

Thanks a lot, I think this was the right way to go.

There comes a point where the joke that is Jack Thompson just stops being funny. That point has come and gone a long while ago.

Honestly, I know almost nobody in real life who even knows who Jack Thompson is (only those I have told personally). The man is having no impact on...anything. He's just a lunatic that does his best to irritate the "gaming community" that he laughably questions exists.
Oh, he knows we exist, because if we didn't then he would have nobody to listen to his hyperbole at all.

All he is doing is being a heartless and malicious troll on these boards. He isn't special, and he isn't important at all. I’m getting sick of watching him grab desperately for any straws he can find in a vain effort to prolong his 15 minutes of fame (which ironically never even started outside of our community). I really hope he proves to be as lazy as normal and not bother creating an account here.

What if Mister Thompson got himself a LJ? He could start posting in it and maybe we'd all get a look into how his mind works.

Or it could be just as screwed up as Tourette's Guy.

No more lazy-anonymous posting for me :*(

Hey dennis, why don't you just set up something on your own site similar to /.? In fact, isn't the script behind /. free? If it's a bandwidth issue, though, that's certainly understandable, but on the plus side, you could then allow anon comments, but just like with /. they would be moderated to oblivion if not appropriate.

...Actually, it'd kinda be funny to see Jack get moderated -5 Flamebait or -5 Troll on all of his posts.

To participate in a community one should join the community. Even high profile commentators like Attorney Thompson need to do that. If someone can't be bothered to actually join the community, then let his or her voice remain unheard.

Now we can get back to doing what this site was setup for, and that's discussing the issues of Gaming and Politics.

I doubt (and hope) JT will get an account, as then he'll lose that anonymous protection which allows him to post all his bullshit.

Either way, good work Dennis.

Dennis, You aren't removing anonymity, you are adding reputation.

LJ accounts are just as anonymous as the "anonymous comment", they just link comments together for the average person.

Though I doubt whoever it was posting on the previous entry about Steukerjuergen's suicide was in fact Jack Thompson (the guy's a lawyer. I sincerely doubt he even knows how to even turn ON a computer, much less access LJ), it's always good to have accountability when having a serious discussion forum such as this one.

Anonimity still exists with an LJ account. Create an email address on any number of free email servers. IP addresses are just as secure with as without. If one is paranoid enough, there's always software to hide an IP address. Certainly doesn't stop one from posting. Not to mention it helps tell one individual from another by having a free LJ account. Someone mentioned OpenID, but I'm not familar with that.
And since you can set up your LJ account to log you in automatically thanks to a cookie, there's no problem with taking the time to log in each time you open a page.to make a comment.
So I really don't see a problem.

That IF Jack gets an LJ account, that we make steps to ignore his pathetic rants in the future. Considering how evil we now know this "man" to be following his recent attack, we have to make it clear he's not important anymore.

He has no power in the politics world and neither the gaming world, so there's no reason for him to be here, other than to annoy us all and laugh at the results. No-one else listens to this lawyer, so why should we.

Dennis has taken the first step in preventing anymore of his sickening twisted posts. I think we owe Dennis the same, by ignoring JT should he return.

Rich

Every single time Jack posted here he started a huge flamewar. A one-sided flamewar at that, since he hardly ever responded to anybody's arguments. He'd throw the first rock and then run away. Nothing good ever came out of replying to him.

Whenever I checked gamepolitics (I check it a lot now) and saw that a particular story had over 500 comments, my first thought was always "Oh boy, Jack Thompson's posted again." When you think about it though, the real problem wasn't JT offending people- it was that all the comments derailed from the issue at hand and focused solely on attacking him. He was able to turn every discussion into a circus that he orchestrated, and the whole point was lost.

So if he shows up again, let's finally turn our backs on him.
