Postal CEO Speaks Out on Synagogue Attack, Jack Thompson

A bloody rampage in a Moscow synagogue made headlines around the world last week. The incident was of particular interest to GamePolitics readers as the suspect was widely reported to be a devotee of Running With Scissors ultra-violent Postal series.

Yesterday, Running With Scissors CEO Vince Desi issued a statement on the synagogue attacks and addressed comments made by anti-game game activist Jack Thompson as well as various news outlets. Desi said, in part:

"In this case, the hypocrisy and irresponsible anti-game zealotry has never been more obvious. Mr. Thompson ignores the fact that the assailant was enthralled by a racist book that espouses anti-Semitic hatred... Despite our renegade image, we have ALWAYS maintained that violence belongs in videogames, NOT on the streets... We wish no ill upon anyone, not even Mr. Thompson, despite his despicable, self-serving campaign to spread misinformation and hateful invective about Running With Scissors and POSTAL, in particular and the entire videogame industry in general.

"...POSTAL is a social parody in the form of a videogame. If games turned players into murderers we'd be up to our necks in corpses. The independent POSTAL franchise has been a convenient scapegoat for misinformation and outright fabrications by 'journalists' and politicians throughout its history.

"...POSTAL makes no attempt to defend or justify violence committed by the player... As in the real world, the player may find weapons... And, just as in the real world, the choice of what to do with those weapons is yours. Misuse results in severe consequences, in POSTAL you're always held accountable. In our opinion that makes POSTAL 2 the most politically correct game ever made.

Games aren't everything, Vince know this.
But I'm starting to think there should be a legal disclaimer on videogames.

something like "by playing this game, you, your friends, and any family members agree to waive your right to sue in case you do something stupid like killing people and begining controversy with videogames again"

That's the point we keep coming back to. If violent video games train people to be murderers and such, why aren't the courts completely inundated with angry, homicidal teens?

The Postal 2 game has a non escapable statement before the game starts anyway saying not re-enact any game elements in real life. So anyone trying to pin the arguement on the Postal game is either stupid or narrow minded.

Nice statement, accurate in the "if it makes people killers, we'd all be dead" concept. People need to be unbalanced BEFORE they're exposed to, well, anything. Be it a fantasy world via videogames, via movies, or via books. Or a desire for fame via media, a common connection in a non fiction book, or just a random social trigger that really bothers them.

But the problem is that we're so loathe to declare our children as possible unbalanced or messed up that we ignore all the warning signs, and simply allow them to go about their business and assume it's all childhood rebelling, and then express shock that they go and do something violent.

Since interactive entertainment doesn't actually train for the most part (What you can pull away from an FPS: don't aim for the head, and tactical movement. What you can pull away from DDR: How to not fall down trying to look like a fool to music. What you can't pull from an FPS: How to actually fire a weapon with recoil. Chances are without actual range practice, you will injure yourself with a handgun, or seriously injure yourself with a shotgun due to recoil. What you can't pull from DDR: How to not step on your dance partner's feet to music.), what it does do is depict violence. Which you can see in any movie (which will actually train you to use a weapon more accurately, as you can watch someone firing blanks with relatively accurate recoil, so teaching you how to stand and hold the weapon. Even if their firing patterns usually suck and wouldn't hit a think past 5 feet.), or even on Cable after 10pm, or news at any hour on a bad day.

So basically, there's so much violence in media that attacking one aspect isn't going to help anything. And no child is sniping after playing Quake for days, and especially not after playing GTA (with possibly the most unusable third person aiming system ever created). They're actually finding a weapon somewhere and Practicing, or they're only hitting people when they go to shoot up a school by accident. The whole leaving to practice thing should be your last sign as a parent that possibly Something's Wrong. In most cases, the court determines that even more obvious signs were available, it's just that nobody acted on them. Be it a love of nazi propoganda, hate speeches, or a gaggle of friends who repeatedly said "we're going to shoot up the school". Something was there as a warning, and it should have been acted upon (and they're getting better at it, I've known a few children who have been suspended in the past few years on extremely light evidence of violent behavior), instead of blaming Movies, Video Games, or whatever. The problem remains that the child had issues before the entertainment media ever entered their lives, and that issue allowed them to recieve stimulation incorrectly. The only question is who is responsible for the child's actions: their parents, or their game console. It's far easier emotionally to blame "a company" for a tragic outbreak, than to tell a greiving parent it may have at some point been obvious to them that their child had problems and needed help.

I can see how you would say that, but personal experiences of mine have proven differently.

When I was in high school I would go to the arcade and play Area 51 religiously. If it only took me one dollar to beat the game, I wouldn't be happy until I beat it with 75 cents and so forth.

After high school I joined the military. I had never in my life shot a real handgun before yet somehow I walk away with a 37/40.

Area 51 taught me how to shoot. It's what you do with that knowlege that sets you aside from everyone else.

I exactly wonder how the Postal games actually cause people to kill. I play Scorched Earth and it doesn't make me want to blow up other people in tanks, nor does the game Painkiller make me want to run around shooting stakes through cars for money.

This is like comic books and rock music all over again, but it is good that some of the companies are speaking out against the bias and the ignorance in the media and defending themselves.

Although I am kind of confused with Mr. Desi's wording of his press release, I am glad he took the time to speak out against the senseless scapegoatism.

In terms of chemistry, certain videogames are the catalyst and the individual is the reactant. The game doesn't make the individual what he is, but rather intensifies an already existing characteristic in that individual.

Personal opinion, anyway.

This is rather true...
Any form of media, hell anyTHING, can intensify already exisiting characteristics, human beings can be impressionable creatures... ofcourse, wheather or not this happens depends upon how a person is raised into the world... a person with shitty upbringing probably could become influenced by playing some games, watching some movies, or lisentening to some music... however, a person with decent upbringing would not be so easily swayed and are pretty much unphased by games, moviies and so-forth... most poeple tend to needs something more extreme, like something horrible that's actually going on in the real world, or in this case, being exposed to lots of Anti-semitic media...

I think they were likely joking, but then again... see below... they are nothing if not an equal-opportunity offender...

However, I'm going to assume it's just like any other game where you do need to shed some blood to progress.

It's not required though. For example, in the first mission, you have to go to the "Lucky Ganesh" convenience store and fetch some milk. You start out with enough cash to pay for the milk. If you want, you can walk to the store, buy the milk, come home, mission complete. BUT if you want, you can wipe out the S&M gay bar, slaughter the rednecks, destroy the terrorist cell in the back of the convenience store, steal the milk, blitz the "health pipe" house (middle-class druggies), and just cause general mahem.

the Action-Reaction part of Postal was the only thing I really liked. You get in trouble just for walking around carrying a weapon. In GTA, you can run around with a bazooka, drive up the wrong side of the road doing 100mph in a school zone and the cops just go "meh."

As a side note, i like how in Mafia, you get in trouble for simple driving violations (i.e. speeding, wrong side of the road, hit and run, hitting the sidewalk...).

actually, in Postal 2 you don't have to kill anyone, if a player targets people in the game based on race, ethnicity or sexual oriantation then that is the act of the player not the game, and their characters in the game don't go unpunished for the acts either

Dear Mr. Desi:

You name the place and the time. I shall be delighted to debate you about this entire issue. Do you have the courage to do it? Maybe the great philantropists, Penny Arcade, will put up the money to defray the costs. How about it, tough guy? Jack Thompson

Because he issued an international news release about me, you knucklehead. He doesn't care about me? He seems to care a great deal about me, and he should.

He holds you up as an example of hypocritical, irresponsible anti-game zealotry. That's hardly caring about you. That's more holding up the organ monkey and saying "see! a monkey! that plays organs!"

He's using you as a beacon because you're such an attention whore, not because you have any influence.

Just an interesting thought
[info]dagrak

The current anti-gamer belief is that games teach gamers to perform acts of violence without fear of consequence, that the game makes them believe that there is nothing wrong with what they are doing. However I see a slight flaw in this, games do not allow these actions to be consequence free, here are some examples:

Thief - The dark Age: In this game you can kill anyone you see, however doing so alerts guards (as people scream), blood stains reveal your presence and perform many murders and guards and factions will hunt for you. Killing lots of people actually makes it a very difficult game to play.

Grand Theft Auto: Kill a civilian/cop and the police start looking for you, go on a bloody rampage and hordes of armoured cops and helicopters will gun you to bits. The game becomes impossible to play.

Baldurs Gate: Kill people and the most powerful wizards in the world reduce you to chunky steaming kibbles.

Splinter Cell: Kill an innocent and you either fail, lose points or are discovered.

Soldier of Fortune: Kill a civilian and you fail the mission.

In fact morality in games play a very large part, even games that let you be evil (Fable, Black and White the wonderful Knights of the Old Rebublic)all have some disadvantages to taking the dark path. I have never played a game where you can murder innocents and get away scott free, thats not to say they don't exist but if the majority of these games are teaching us that murder doesn't pay can't it therefore be reasoned that the idiots who do this really are just nuts?

Obviously I still don't feel these games are for children and I do feel there is room for politicians and the industry to comprimise, I just thought I'd air a point I had been musing over. Now if you'll excuse me, my food is burning.

"Grand Theft Auto: Kill a civilian/cop and the police start looking for you, go on a bloody rampage and hordes of armoured cops and helicopters will gun you to bits. The game becomes impossible to play"

That can be True But Depending how good you are it is possible to continue running around even with six stars

My Trick is i use the pay n spray near cortez and snipe my way to Four Stars Usually (i always keep my car in the pay n spray and snipe on that building next to it) after i have gotten my four stars i then use my rocket launcher and finish up to get up to six and as soon as a tank comes i just hit the tank to get the guy to come out and then blow him up with a rocket launcher and jump down get inside my car and let it do the thing where the wanted levels are blinking then get out and hope in the tank and go around and let the stars go back and boom 6 stars with a tank that usually nets me around 500-1000 kills.

Oh If im M.I.A for a few days its because Eb games just called like 20 minutes ago and me and my roomate will have our x box 360 today.
