Flier With Dubious Video Game Link Causes Fear at Florida School

Zombies... video games... Saturday Night Live... school violence...

Is there a link?

A Florida newspaper has reported a possible video game connection in regard to some mysterious and vaguely threatening fliers circulated last week at a Tallahassee high school.

The Tallahassee Democrat reported in Saturday's edition that an employee of Leon High School first discovered the flier near the school's parking lot. As many as nine more found by students at various locations were turned over to school administrators. As described by the Democrat, the fliers depict "several males lying in what appears to be the bed of a truck and shooting guns at a group of people." The Tallahassee Deomcrat has confirmed that the line drawing depicted here is the picture in question. A police investigation is underway.

The paper reports that the picture "may be related to a video game," although no game is specified. A shorter piece in Friday's edition suggests the video game link theory originated with officials of the Leon County Sheriff's Office. In response to the discovery of the fliers, school officials ramped up security measures and additional deputies are patrolling the school.

"We take it extremely seriously," Principal Rocky Hanna told the Democrat. "(The students) want to feel safe."

"We don't see this as a threat," Sheriff Larry Campbell said. "But, in today's times, you can't just write these things off." Campbell added that the responsible parties would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

What is on the fliers that school and law enforcement officials find so troubling? In addition to the image are the words "BE PREPARED" and a handwritten notation which reads "demonoid.com #243751."

Demonoid.com is a BitTorrent file-sharing site. The number refers to a PDF of The Zombie Survival Guide, a parody book written by Saturday Night Live writer Max Brooks, son of famed comic Mel Brooks. According to its description on Amazon, "In this outrageous parody of a survival guide, Saturday Night Live staff writer Brooks prepares humanity for its eventual battle with zombies... a member of an anti-zombie team must be sure to have with him at all times two emergency flares, a signaling mirror, daily rations, a personal mess kit and two pairs of socks."

Could that be where the "BE PREPARED" message comes in? The book also contains numerous simple illustrations. We found the one depicted here on page 152. It certainly matches the description of the flier stirring up official concern in Tallahassee.

Although the Democrat reports that "'Zombie' is a video game," GP is not so sure. There are plenty of games based on zombies, of course, but we can't recall a single one actually named "Zombie."

"This underscores the importance of parents knowing what their kids are doing online," school superintendent Bill Montford said. "This should be a wake-up call to parents. Students shouldn't be involved in games where people are being shot."

GP: This is a bizarre story that seems very likely to be a case of much ado about nothing. School officials and police, of course, must err on the side of caution, but from a cultural perspective, it's fascinating to see how a non-existent video game connection is dredged up, giving the story an extra element of menace. Note that school officials, law enforcement and the Tallahassee Democrat all refer to the video game connection as if it were a given. In fact, a very small amount of digging reveals there is no game link.

I really cannot see how someone could link this to video games with the information at hand. Sounds like a morbid high school prank to me.

Yeah, this is definitely a prank by someone with a thing for zombies. Kind of like if someone were to print out that "The Dead Walk" CNN article and spread it around campus pretending it's real.

"This underscores the importance of parents knowing what their kids are doing online," school superintendent Bill Montford said. "This should be a wake-up call to parents. Students shouldn't be involved in games where people are being shot."

This man is an idiot.

Umm, I'm guessing the idiot assumed the Zombie Survival Guide was like a stragey guide for a game called "Zombie."

and the person will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law

Erm, last I checked, there wasn't a law against parody. And even if the book was serious, there's no law against killing zombies, is there? Doubtful, seeing as they're already dead and stuff...

If I lived anywhere near Tallahassee, I'd claim responsibilty for fun, and dare those fools to arrest me. Then sue them for false arrest, libel, slander, and/or anything else that could possibly be relevant. Hell, could make it a total circus by suing for civil rights violation because they're clearly discriminating against the living!

And, on a side note, is there even a term for warez books?

Yeah, I'm going to make a prediction that in the end it'll be the work of some kid that read the Zombie Survival Guide after looking up stuff about SNL. They'll have decided it was funny and to make the fliers as a joke. The authorities, rather than admit they overreacted, they'll focus on how irresponsible the kid was for putting out something that could so easily be misinterpreted in this day and age. Additionally the media will decide against making much mention of something from SNL being the inspiration. Instead, after the person's been found, but before everything's been made clear, much will be made about the videogames the kid has at home, regardless of the ratings of the games, or how many other kids at school have the exact same games at home.

[info]mrbrightcoco
2006-01-08 07:33 pm UTC (link)
Ok, this really pisses me off, because it involves two of my favorite things (videogames and zombies). Is it really that difficult for the people to realize that this is just a way for a bunch of kids to get people interested in the Zombie Survival Guide? First of all, I've read the book from cover to cover, and although its written entirely straight, anyone with the slightest sense of humor will realize it's a work of satire. I mean, hell, its written by Mel Brooks' son, AND it's located in the humor section of any book store for christ's sake! Also, the illustration that I assume there talking about is an cartoon diagram of one of the "safer was to dispose of zombies" out of the book. Secondly, and this is what really gets me, is how in the HELL does a "newspaper" have to right to say "oh gee, this MIGHT have something to do with videogames"? I mean, would I have the right, as a newspaper, to say "well, we don't have any facts about this murder, but we think it involves John Doe at 2020 Atlantic Ave". Yes, thats an exaggeration, but personally I read a newspaper for facts, not speculation. And finally, who the fuck would name a video game about Zombies "Zombie" (unless its about Lucio Fulcis classic film that is). I mean seriously, thats like naming a golf game "Golf", and they haven't done that since the days of Colleco Vision. Seriously, sometimes when I think about how stupid most people are, it makes me want to build a spaceship and just start all over on a new planet.
P.S. Reading the news on this site actually makes me ashamed to be a Democrat.

I go to the Store to pick up some Groceries and come back to a story like this.Ahh what a great world we live in now where the first thing that comes to mind when people see something like that is "Eurika Video games must be the cause"

Whoever did this if they were serious then ya bust their asses with what u can.If it was a prank (im guessing it was) laugh it off and tell them to try a better one next time.Hell it was prolly a couple of gamers who wanted to see how blown out of proportion It could get.

"This underscores the importance of parents knowing what their kids are doing online," school superintendent Bill Montford said. "This should be a wake-up call to parents. Students shouldn't be involved in games where people are being shot."

Hmmm Now im just curious on this one."Students shouldnt be involved in games where people are being shot" ok now does he mean like Freshman and sophmores or is he talking about the entire school.Seeing as how im sure more then a few students there are 18.Im lost and have no idea what to make of this story other then i think im gonna go toke

Hell, I can even describe what section it's from!

It's from the "On the Offense" section, where it gives tips and warnings on how to clean out a zombie-infested town. The image here depicts one of the suggested method, which would be to make noise to attract the zombies (Who would then release feeding-groans, and alert other zombies, so you now have a horde following you), and lie in the back of a flat-bed truck, while a friend drives slowly away. This allows you to head-shot the zombies at your leisure, while not putting you in much danger at all. (As your friend can always speed up and drive away).
