Hot Coffee Scandal Named to List of Worst P.R. Blunders

What do Tom Cruise, Pat Robertson, Vioxx and Rockstar Games have in common?

All were named to a list of 2005's biggest P.R. blunders.

Since 1995 Fineman PR, a San Francisco public relations firm, has issued its annual list of the top 10 P.R. pratfalls. This year Cruise made it for his well-publicized flip-out on the Today Show. Television preacher Robertson earned a spot for advocating the assassination of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez. Concealing the health risks of painkiller Vioxx guaranteed pharmaceutical manufacturer Merck's inclusion.

As for Rockstar, including the Hot Coffee sex animations alone might not have propelled them on to the list. Repeatedly lying about how the steamy content got onto game discs, however, sealed their place in the Pantheon of PR disasters.

Michael Fineman, creator of the list, explained that corporate mistakes are unavoidable. How they are managed is often the difference between a mere problem and a full-on P.R. disaster.

"A lot of these blunders oftentimes are not about honest mistakes that people make. Oftentimes the difference lies in the response that the organizations make to the original blunder. And oftentimes that response if filled with arrogance and so forth - and that's really where they make their biggest mistake...

Yep. Sure sounds like Rockstar's disastrous mismanagement of the Hot Coffee fiasco.

GP: Tough month for Rockstar and parent company Take-Two Interactive. Just last week Take-Two boss Paul Eibeler was named "Worst CEO of 2005" by MarketWatch. We imagine they will make a few more naughty lists by year's end. We already know they'll be on ours, which you'll hear next week in the Special Holiday Edition of the GamePolitics podcast.

I have to take issue with the description of San Andreas in that article - it's not fair to say that "Rockstar Games added hidden animated sex scenes", so much as they "didn't remove" those scenes.

Whatever you say, Hot Coffee is the video game PR fiasco of the year. And yes, Rockstar ADDED the animations then hid them to prevent people from accessing them.

GTA fanboys should stop thinking their game and it's mother company is so great, really...

I'm not surprised that Rockstar made a PR blunder list with the "Hot Coffee" stuff that went on this summer.

I wonder if it will make any Top 10 News Stories of the year lists, besides the video game sites?

FYI: After much deliberating on my part, I finally decided to get me a LJ.

I can give them the benefit of the doubt if it got into the first version without anyone noticing; but to believe that the code was ported over to the Xbox and PC versions of the game w/out anyone noticing? C'mon. Don't spit on me and tell me its raining.

You're assuming that the resource is code. You can do stuff like this entirely in script.

For example, all of the LucasArts adventure games were scripts that can be ported to anything under the sun without knowing everything about the content.

Has anyone actually read the statement that R* released?
[info]godofyouall
2005-12-13 04:14 pm UTC (link)
Firstly I want to get something straight I am NOT a R* fanboy. Out of all the games released by R* I have only played GTA: Vice City and San Andreas and although both these games were good, I have played better.

I just have to say though that all this talk about them lying is bullshit. Has anyone actually read the statement that they released? NO WHERE does it mention that they didn't leave the content on the disk, NO WHERE does it say that the modders created the actual HC content. It is just a carefully worded statement confirming that the HC MOD itself was done by the hackers. Have a read again at what was said:

>>>So far we have learned that the 'hot coffee' modification is the work of a determined group of hackers who have gone to significant trouble to alter scenes in the official version of the game. In violation of the software user agreement, hackers created the 'hot coffee' modification by combining, reconstituting, and altering the game's source code.<<<

I can see no lie here, the hackers did need to go through significant trouble to alter the scenes. All this talk about just altering a single bit of information is bull crap - that just unlocked fully clothed, dry humping animation (confirmed by the HC modder ilspirit) and I bet they didn't just discover this overnight either. To get the finalized, nude scenes I bet the hackers had to delve deep into the game source code to figure out all this stuff. Maybe the end result was to just toggle a single bit of information but the process of finding this out I bet was a lengthy one.

The game was originally rated for people 17+ then when HC was blown out of all proportion it was upgraded to an 18+ rating, OMG WOW what a major disaster that was *sarcasm*. And as already mentioned by numerous people (even the hackers themselves) the content that was actually left on the disk did not warrant the AO rating anyway.

As I have stated before people just love to make a mountain out of a molehill and I just can't help feeling that certain people have been a little harsh on R*.

Anyone who defends Rockstar is automatically a fanboy. Didn't you know that? [I'm kidding.]

I don't recall if I ever said Rockstar straight up lied. If I did, I was wrong. Or just not thinking that day. :P

But that's not what the politicians saw, and heaven forbid they do any research.

Every time Hot Coffee gets mentioned somewhere, I feel like it's been thrown in my face, because a lot of times, it's being thrown at the industry, of which I am a part of.

Anyhoo, yes, Rockstar and Take Two did not handle the situation as gracefully and as tactfully as they could have. If they had discussed some things with the ESRB ahead of time, his whole incident wouldn't have been blown so out of proportion. And I'm fairly certain there was some lack of communication between Rockstar and Take Two as well. I still think TT had no idea that the game contained a sex mini-game. Either that or they'd been told no one would ever find it. In any event, they should have informed the ESRB, and explained the situation. I don't know what would have happened from there, but I'm sure the outcome would have been better than the incident that gave a certain lunatic a platform to get attention with.

Immediate News Release – December 13, 2005

Video Game Industry To Go on Trial in Alabama!

A trial court in Fayette, Alabama, has just entered an historic order denying all motions to dismiss a wrongful death lawsuit filed on behalf of the families of two police officers and a police dispatcher against Sony, Take-Two/Rockstar, Wal-Mart, and GameStop. The teen killer literally trained on the Grand Theft Auto games to kill them.

This lawsuit made headlines around the world when it was filed in February 2005, as it was featured on CBS’s 60 Minutes in March and July 2005 and in the August 2005 Reader’s Digest. This is the first time such a lawsuit has scored such a success.

Plaintiffs are seeking hundreds of millions of dollars from the corporate defendants, and the way is now clear for plaintiffs to wade through defendants’ files regarding what they knew and when they knew it about the danger to public safety posed by these murder simulation games. The case will be tried to a jury in Fayette, Alabama. Alabama leads the nation in the size of verdicts against corporate defendants.

Before the triple homicide in Alabama, Take-Two/Rockstar Games, the makers of the Grand Theft Auto games, had been warned, in writing, by Miami attorney Jack Thompson that murders such as those in Alabama would occur by teens who had rehearsed the murders on their virtual reality killing simulators. Thompson will likely be a witness in the case. Take-Two/Rockstar chose to ignore these warnings, which paves the way for huge punitive damages.

Miami attorney Jack Thompson, who will be assisting plaintiffs’ counsel during the discovery process and in the courtroom at trial, brought a similar action in April 1999 arising out of the killing of three students in Paducah, Kentucky, by 14-year-old Michael Carneal. That case was ahead of its time. It’s time has now come, particularly in light of overwhelming law enforcement, medical, and scientific evidence that there is a known and direct link between violent video games and teen violence.

The industry has known of this causal link for years and yet it has continued to market and sell, through reckless retailers like Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target, Circuit City, and GameStop these Mature-rated murder simulators to children. Thompson’s own son, 13, was able to walk into Best Buy this month and buy the most violent game being sold.

One of the purposes of the Alabama case, which is expected to be tried in 2006, is to stop the sale of these games to kids, which is in fact the law in Canada, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Take-Two’s CEO, Paul Eibeler, was last week voted by MarketWatch “America’s Worst CEO.” Take-Two’s NASDAQ stock has plummeted on his scandalous watch. Contact Jack Thompson at 305-666-4366, cell 305-588-3005.

Why would people be that shocked to see "Hot Coffee" in the game. On the ESRB content description it says "Strong Sexual Content" and that is what the game gave you. What would you expect?

Since he used his own son to buy that game, and since Jack claims over and over again these games are harmful and should be illegal to sell to minors, doesn't that mean Jack contributed to the harmful deliquency of a minor? And isn't that a crime?

By his own admission, Thompson admits doing it, so should something happen?

While I agree Rockstar handled the Hot Coffee situation poorly, I honestly can't stand this modern-day habit people have of taking heavily satirical web comic humour as gospel for what they should and shouldn't believe.

It's like basing all your political views on a few episodes of The Simpsons or Family Guy, sure they tend to raise some points worth thinking about, but they were never intended to be anything more than satire, and should never be taken as a pure source for forming opinions on subjects as deep as politics. Matt Groening and Seth MacFarlane make animated TV shows, they sure as hell aren't the all-knowing meaning of life.

This generally doesn't apply to GP or even the post I'm replying to, strictly speaking... it's just really annoying to have some kind of good discussion going, only to have someone come along and say 'oh yeah, well some random geek who posts comics on the internet says THIS so HAH!' then have everyone suddenly bow to the all-knowing genius that is the geeky web comic writer. I mean, sure, Tycho might write some pretty clever stuff, but there's an equal amount of things he says that he could quite legitimately be called a moron for, and at the end of the day, he's just another guy who plays video games like the rest of us.

Sorry, a little off topic there, just a little something that gets my goat.

Jack doesn't have much self control, does he? I figured he would really leave for good, but I guess that was expecting too much from him. He was doing such a good job keeping his word too. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Again the "press release" penned by Thompson, pretending like it isn't by refering to himself in third person. Something tells me he writes this garbage just so he can post it on here. But, welcome back...again Mr. Thompson.

I espically love how it claims a causative link between the game and violence, when there is a newspost- Just today, in fact- that says it has been proven that this isn't the case.

... Of course, that makes me wonder why the defendant's motion to dismiss was denied. But again, I'm going to wait for someone RESPONSIBLE to report as to the nature of this case...

jack will never learn. Why does he insist on making a fool of himself. I can't beleive used his own son just to make himself look good and someone else look bad. Does he think that just because one person in one of the many best buys made a mistake that the whole entire company should suffer for it. Also how does he know that that kid who killed the police officers and dispatcher actually was the one who bought the game from walmart and gamestop. Hey jack do everyone a favor and just give up already. hey dennis do you know the exact date for the trail. Also i thought this trial was already going on.

Guess I was right about him trolling around here huh?

I'm glad the bogus civil suit in Alabama is going to trial. That'll make it mean more when it fails, which it will.

The nature of this latest press release is very dark and foreboding. He's trying really hard to demonize his opponents, even more so than before. None of it is justified, and soon enough, the world is going to see this.

Thing is, I wouldn't be surprised if most people here couldn't give a damn if Rockstar went under because of their own mistakes, I'm pretty new here, but been following the Jack Thompson story from the UK for a while, and it seems to me that what people are annoyed about is that they are consistently being forced to defend something they'd rather not be defending by the grandstanding actions of Mr Thompson.

It's a tricky situation, if people say nothing, then it will be claimed as a victory, if people say something then they are 'spotty porn-obsessed children'. I can assure you, most people have better things to do than defend a company from it's own stupidity, however, there are those that would take one company's mistakes and try to blame the entire industry :(
