A Jack Thompson Buffet

What's that? You say you want more Jack Thompson news?

Too bad - you're getting it anyway...

First, Jack's book Out of Harm's Way is now available through online retailers. It should be on the shelves in bookstores within a day or two. You can read the first chapter here.

Next, online mag The Escapist has a profile of the game-bashing attorney, written by scribe Dave Thomas. It's quite a good read. Best line: "Keeping track of Jack's activities is like trying to document an evening of binge drinking for an entire fraternity on a lost weekend in Vegas."

Finally, Thompson has petitioned Troy King, Attorney General of Alabama, to have PSP title GTA: Liberty City Stories declared a nuisance. The outspoken attorney complains to A.G. King that Take-Two is marketing what he describes as a "cop-killing game" on daytime T.V. during (unspecified) programs aimed at children. Some readers may recall that Thompson moved to have Rockstar's upcoming "Bully" declared a nuisance in Florida earlier this year. That matter is believed to be still pending.

He's pimpin a book now, so mebbe he'll get onto the Daily Show, and we can see for once that he isn't the Mister Hyde to Jon Stewart's Dr Jekyll.

Or then again, mebbe Jon will just dim the lights, put on the wig, and we'll see the truth in what could be the creepiest Bates~esque moment in fake news history.....

They're advertising the games, not the PSP, and the last time I checked 16-year-olds were buying $50 games with no parents in site, in violation of promises made by the retail video game industry to Congress as early as 1992. Duh. Jack Thompson

i think its unfair to put restrictions on videogames, i mean if states were to do the same thing to R-rated movies with nudity and graphic violence there would be outrage. so i would urge jack to reconsider his stance on videogames because this is unfair. and what about adult R-rated movies that show sexual intercourse intercourse and nudity like monsters ball with halle berry, and very graphic violence, all availible to children at stores with no restrictions so please dont single videogames out!

Some Commentary
[info]bustermanzero
2005-11-15 09:25 pm UTC (link)
First off, Jack's book is finally out. Huzzah. I imagine there will be a delay at bookstores as they won't know whether to classify it as fiction or non-fiction, but either way it'll end up in the Humor Section.

Second, I think we can all agree with Dave, but it wouldn't surprise me if Jack tries to sue his 'harassing' rear end by the end of the week.

Finally, people have commented on the PSP. Well folks, remember that parents do buy things for their 10 year old kids, such as PSPs. But unless the commercials actually have the specific content in which people are killed, foul language is heard, or whatever would give the game its rating, its not breaking any laws. Heck, I've seen condom commercials on children's networks, but they never once explained what they were for. Just say you don't think the game should be advertised because you think you're in it, Jack, and stop making lame excuses.

Oy.

Apropos of nothing, I went into my local game store the other day to pick up a copy of "The Warriors". There was a 14-year-old kid directly in front of me who also had a copy of it in his hands and was asking the clerk about it. Here's what the clerk had to say:

Clerk: Have you ever played Manhunt? It's kinda like that.
Kid: (mumbling) No...
Clerk: Have you even seen the movie?
Kid: No...
Clerk: Then you have no business playing this game.

Notice that nowhere in that conversation did the clerk ask how old this kid was. To my mind, THAT'S the issue - you don't sell cigarettes, beer or pornos to kids, and you shouldn't sell M+ rated games to kids either. That's not Rockstar's fault - that's the store's fault, and if Jack Thompson had a brain in his head he'd understand that.

Yeah, then if the clerk tells the kid, "This game is not for you," the kid will most likely have a cry to his mum about it, then the mum will harrass the clerk for trying to dictate what her son can or can't play, and it just becomes one big mess.

I've had this happen to me before (I work at an EBGames in Australia).

We have actually had the case when a mother returned Animal Crossing, because she didn't find the talking animals and "doing such stupid chores for the lazy animals" suitable for her 8-year-old son, then bought him GTA:SA instead.

This is no joke...

advertising
[info]sedyn
2005-11-15 09:34 pm UTC (link)
I'm more worried about the commercials for alcohol than games.

Advertising on TV is about 2 things:
1) reminding people that they should buy/consume something
2) informing people about a new product

Children read gaming magazines, gaming sites, etc. because they have time on their hands, and gaming interests them (not all, but most). I know that I was a lot more in touch with the upcoming releases of the gaming industry ten years ago than now.

Furthermore, you have to remember that children go to school, and are in classes with many other children with common interests. So all it takes is one gaming reader to inform many people through word-of-mouth. Just in case you were too old when video games became mainstream, I'll inform you that a common topic of conversation among school children is video games.

The conclusion of this, is that television is not an effective medium for video game advertising towards children.

Has anyone else noticed that there isn't that much advertising on television about gaming? Relatively to being a billion dollar industry.

just for convenience factor.

Book Description
Jack Thompson eats giants for breakfast. Just ask media giant and shock-jock Howard Stern, who ranted on air about the "one lunatic lawyer" who got him kicked off the air. Jack, an outraged father and activist lawyer, is on a mission to protect children from the violent and obscene video games, music lyrics, shock jock radio shows, and television programs he says are creating a culture of violence and degradation. Going beyond outrage, Thompson chronicles his own spiritual journey from bystander to activist and offers the sociological, medical, scientific, and legal evidence that will motivate all Americans--especially parents--to get involved.

Dunno about you, buuuuuuut, I think maybe I'll go back to reading Einstein's autobiography instead.

You can’t declare something a nuisance just because you don’t like it.
[info]andrew_eisen
2005-11-15 09:55 pm UTC (link)
Finally, Thompson has petitioned Troy King, Attorney General of Alabama, to have PSP title GTA: Liberty City Stories declared a nuisance.

A public nuisance is an unreasonable interference with a right common to the general public. GTA: Liberty City Stories can be bought or left on store shelves as the public sees fit. How is this a nuisance?

Depends on the state law. In Florida you only need to vaguely accuse something of possibly being a health hazard to get an injunction against it.

Whats sickening about the first chapter is the ton of speculation and personal attacks (openly, or otherwise) against people. His account of janet reno for instance, is like reading a childs account "maybe it was daddys fault" etc.. then he speculates crap. Its a horribly shoddy peice of writing. This isn't a biopic, its the same crap he always does "look at me, im cool, i was on 60 minutes and cnn" style of thinking...

I want the last twenty minutes of my life back.

I just read the first chapter of that bunch of sub-literary masturbation and it's pretty much what I'd expect from our boy Jack.

Brutal self promotionalism, faux self-pity, more lashing out as his favorite targets (Stern, Reno). I suppose the publisher will put any religious centric drivel on the shelves.

It's Tyndale...a Christian Publishing House. Best known for putting out the decent series "Left Behind".

Yeah, working at an EBGames myself (albeit in Australia), I wouldn't go too far with it... EBGames is far more concerned with making money, not a political statement :/

I've always been confident about everything, even when I have no reason to be.

That explains a lot...

I love the cheap shots at Reno. I think the only reason he hates her, is that she only interviewed him for 10 minutes, and didn't ask a single thing about his personal views. Instead, she offers up how he would handle three seperate cases.

Who would have thought that a person interviewing for a job would be asked how they'd actually DO the job, as opposed to how they could become a political candidate who writes pieces of paper with checkboxes asking whether a person is Hetero-or-homo-sexual.

Sadly, I am going to buy this book. But I'm going to get it as cheap as possible, then right a nice review on how big a self serving bag of crap it is. In no way do I wish to support this guy, but I will read what he has to say, then laugh in his face.

Don't spend your money...just get it at the library for free.

That is, if they decide to carry it.
