Be a Pixelante for Charity

It's less outrageous than the now-famous "I Hate Jack Thompson" t-shirt.

Yet gamers can make their statement - and give back to charity - with a Pixelante t-shirt.

Veteran GamePolitics readers know that Jack Thompson coined the term "pixelante" right here on GP's comments pages to describe gamers in a negative way - i.e. that their lives are ruled by pixels on a screen.

In a nice touch, all proceeds from the shirt will be donated by designer Straight Loop to Child's Play. Thanks to Kotaku for alerting us to the existence of the t-shirt. It was only a matter of time. We've even seen some GP readers kicking the idea around.

The following comments are strictly a matter of fashion sense, of course - something for which GP has never been known - but we don't believe this is the definitive pixelante shirt. It's a little, shall we say, androgynous. Could we see it in black, perhaps?

Also, GP thinks that more could be done with the lettering. Different color, beefier font, something a little Gothic, maybe? The word pixelante itself is a bit delicate. Some big nasty letters would toughen it up. And how about a saying - "Pixelante and Proud" or "Pixelante Patrol"? Maybe even a graphic?

I'm just sayin'

On friday, the server selling these shirts got wanged, so don't be surprised if the page is down. I've seen it go up and down a few times lately.

I'm one of the designer of the Straight Loop Pixelante shirt. I chose the typeface because it had that western cowboy feel. I modified it to be italics so that it had a more aggressive quality, even though this isn't something you see in old style western typography. Then I made it appear pixelated because it obviously had to be that way in my opinion. The back I found some traditional western wood cut elements and redrew them to appear pixelated, and substituted in a space invader so that it had a tie to computer gaming. I considered black and white, but that's so boring. So I chose the brown and yellow to further push the western feel I associate with the word vigilante. I think it's more fashionable than most gaming shirts, I do think it's still very masculine. It was all very fast, designed in only a few hours, but there was thought put into it, and reasoning for why it is the way it is. I think if you're worried that by wearing it you will somehow be less of a man then you have some serious issues you need to work out. Maybe it's just the liberal art environment I'm exposed to, but this is not flameboyant at all.

It's a very nice shirt, and I've looked at your site and can agree that you've got some very nice designs there.

It's just not to my taste, personally.

I'm glad you had that bit at the bottom, cuz I was just thinking "Some kid's going to get the shit kicked out of him wearing that thing, it sounds fruity."

Yeah, I nead something Muy Macho than that.

Perhaps a black and red version of the shirt with a two-toned version of Jack Thompson's face under the red "no" circle? (The image for Jack Thompson akin to the stylizations of Che Guevara that are seen on shirts and murals is the style to which I'm referring.)

Just a thought.

Personally, I wouldn't want to have Jack Thompson's face on anything I own.

But I can't help but feel Jack is going to come along eventually and file a copywrite infringement suit or something. Just my opinion though.

It's taking an insult and spinning it to mean something positive. Sorta like what the rap community did with the "n" word.

That's funny, I still don't consider the "N" word to be positive, even if they say it with an "A" instead of "ER" at the end. It's like Chris Rock says, white people and black people share something in common, they both hate niggas.

Black? Why do the vast majority of gamer tees need to be in black? I mean, brown is a little drab, too, but at least it's not another black t-shirt with red lettering. The world has enough of those. Just because I'm a gamer doesn't mean I don't ever see the sun. I'd rather not have to dress like a goth to express myself as a gamer. Just sayin'..

Agreed.

I just need a pixelante shirt that doesn't make me feel like a.... pixie for wearing it.

Needn't be black.

I object to black being associated with goths. And emo. I'm neither, and I wear black all the time. They've hijacked black as a "depressing/emotional/aloof" colour. I wear it because dark colours look good on me. They contrast my flaming red hair.

I think they should offer several different colours, for those who like black, and those who want other colours to match *their* style.

I think the shirt shouldn't be all macho/aggro...why?

1) There are female games, let's not try to actively exclude them some more.
2) Macho is the soul of the wearer not in the shirt. The shirt isn't pink with sparkles. If one is secure in their masculinity, their won't be a problem. It's just a neutral shirt.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for including women in game-related stuff. And I'm not a macho type or metal head, or anything like that.

I just prefer a shirt that is more clearly designed for a man.

Hmmm.... we may have to do something about this.

It's a pun on his sad attempt at insults. "Pixelante" is supposed to be a "pixelated vigilante", a sort of video-game crazed killer, seeking revenge for games being banned.
