Just out of curiosity, did NIMF send a copy to GP, or did it come from another source? Or did Jack forward it to you?

Maybe someone accused him of not actually receiving the letter? Whereas this shows that someone most certainly did fax it to GP, and their name is [edited by the Secret Service]!

OT - crimes inspired by videogames

Good for a laugh.

Ever since video games became popular, politicians such as Jack Thompson, Joe Lieberman, and Hillary Clinton have repeatedly stated that they (the games, not the politicians) have caused children and teenagers to become evil criminals bent on the ruination of society. According to these politicians, playing a video game even for five minutes can turn a person into a violent lunatic. The massive numbers of so-called "devil devices" have been directly responsible for numerous crimes, and this article attempts to document all crimes inspired by video games.

Is there actually a list that JT has compiled detailing videogame-inspired crimes? I'd love to see it. Especially if any of them involve minors killing people with guns. Because I would LOVE JT to explain how it's perfectly ok for a kid to have access to firearms.

Look, I'm actually for limiting access to violent videogames to minors - I wouldn't want my child playing GTA, and being that I'm a gamer myself I'd make sure that I'd take an interest in the sort of videogames my child would want to play. You know, it's that thing called being a responsible parent.

F'reals yo. She's living with a man who's receiving a lot of flack across the board and who's stirring up tons of controversy. How does she feel about this? Does she agree with her husbands "extremist" views? How does she support him in tough times like the recent "Walsh Fiasco"? Does she work to support the family while her husband is away chasing the illsuive court settlment jackpot with the video game industry?

'Cuz, you know, all this "exclusivity" on GP is really nice, but how about some "investigative journalism"?

Dumping it on the parents.
[info]teh_anonymous
2005-10-17 06:44 pm UTC (link)
I truly am unable to come to terms that the current issues of minors having access to violent video games is 100% the fault of the parents. Maybe I'm just allergic to certain extremes, but when I see posters on GP talk about "it's the parents' responsibility" or "it's the parents' fault" I get uneasy.

First, I am curious about the "credentials" of any and all people who have ever made such a comment. Are you a parent yourself? What background or experience do you have in caring for your own children (babysitting, or children relatives aside)?

Secondly, I would like to understand why the the onus lies "strictly" on the parent. Are game developers not involved in either legal or ethical ways? Are, then, video games supposed to illustrate the "great failure of American parents"? Or are the "problem parents" only a few bad apples?

3 things.

1. Parents should take the responisbility to look at what their kids want them to buy.

2. Parents should have the responsibility to impose limits on their kids, and to research what their kids are doing.

3. Parents need to learn to say "no".

Games companies can't do any of this. Not all parents are weak or ignorant,m but many are, and that's the problem.

Maybe it will be easier for you to come to terms with if you accept the fact that alot of people shouldn't be parents in the first place.

First, I am curious about the "credentials" of any and all people who have ever made such a comment. Are you a parent yourself? What background or experience do you have in caring for your own children (babysitting, or children relatives aside)?

No, but I soon will be a father, and I recall exactly how I pressured my parents & relatives to buy me stuff, and how they sometimes didn't pay attention to what they were buying me. Therefore I feel that they either felt that I was mature enough to handle myself, or they were unaware that they should have been paying attention. I know better, and have a wealth of information at my fingertips in order to keep tabs on what I feel my child should and should not be exposed to. And you can be damn sure if the kid asks me for $60 I'm going to want to know why, and will likely be there when he/she spends it.

Secondly, I would like to understand why the the onus lies "strictly" on the parent. Are game developers not involved in either legal or ethical ways? Are, then, video games supposed to illustrate the "great failure of American parents"? Or are the "problem parents" only a few bad apples?

Parents are the legal guardians of children. They alone are allowed to have the final decision as to what their kids are exposed to. They are responsible for teaching their child right from wrong. The basic objection to parents giving up their responsiblities is that it leads to the "nanny state", where parents have given up the ability to judge what's right for their child, because the state is basically raising their child for them.

I find the biggest hurdle is that thanks to the media, videogames and cartoons are viewed as "kids stuff" by those who were never exposed to things like the Playstation, or Anime. The stereotype that all cartoons are the equivalent of Disney, and all games are the equivalent of Mario. This is why parents don't bother to pay attention.

While not all of us are parents, all of us have or had parents and are or have been children and are thus qualified to comment on parental responsibilities and techniques.

Game developers are not responsible for anyone’s children but their own.

So don't become a parent. How hard is it for people to look at themselves, realize they have neither the capacity nor the desire to care for a child, and get a vasectomy?

It makes sense now. JT thinks the letter was fake, and that the whole thing is a load of malarchy. But this is not the case, since Dennis has the actual letter WITH the insignia, SIGNATURE, and everything to show that it is legit.

In essence, this IS Dave Walsh's letter and not a hoax. If it was a hoax, then Dennis would not have been able to put that PDF up with the John Hancock and everything.

And thus, JT goes to Lieberman to cry his woes and sorrows out. Just like one good Christian to anoth... oh wait... Lieberman's Jewish.

Guess that won't work then! :)

Note that I myself am not one who enjoys publicly insulting people based on actions inspired by faith, but for those said actions to try and get your way or make oneself seem holier than thou... just does not seem morally right.

It's kind of funny when you think of it. JT accuses Take-Two of underhanded practices when he himself uses them. Too bad he couldn't have taken a better road. Oh well.

Somehow I do not recall Dave (or anyone with authority on this site) stipulating that all LiveJournal comments should focus only on the posted article. That said, I've seen many times the comments "derailed" in light of either Jack's post or someone's related comments.

Furthermore I am not quite sure what you are referring to as the "dead horse". Dennis wanted to post the PDF copies of the letter to reassert his credibility in light of any of any comments Jack might make.
